Proudfoot and Leishman Shine at National Championship Races

Track North Athletic's Club's Ross Proudfoot, 19 (Lively, ON) and Eric Leishman, 21 (Chapleau) both turned in solid performances at their respective university and college national cross-country running championships this past weekend.

Proudfoot, competing in his second year for the University of Guelph, placed 4th at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) National Cross-Country Running Championships contested on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City, QC. Proudfoot ran the challenging, snow covered 10 kilometre course in a time of 31 minutes and 59 seconds; 17 seconds behind gold medalist and Guelph teammate Andrew Nixon (Thunder Bay). Matt Walters (North Bay) competing for the University of Windsor took home the bronze medal. Proudfoot and his Guelph teammates earned their sixth consecutive national title with the lowest score seen at the championships since 1966.

"I didn't quite have the last lap that I wanted as we made an early team push at the 3.5km mark and that took my legs out a bit early. But overall I'm extremely happy with our team result and looking foward to the indoor track season" commented Proudfoot following his race.

By virtue of his top 6 finish, Proudfoot earned a spot to competed for Canada at the World University Cross-Country Championships next spring in Poland.

Leishman, competing in his third year for Cambrian College, place 13th at the Canadian College Cross-Country Running Championships in Kamloops, B.C. Leishman completed the 8 kilometre course on McArthur Island in a time of 26 minutes, 30 seconds. Leishman's performance also helped Team Ontario team win gold in the conference championships.

"It was a fast race and I'm happy with how things turned out - it's been a solid season" commented Leishman following his race.

Proudfoot Wins Silver at OUA Cross Country Champs

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, 19, (Lively) competing for the
University of Guelph won a silver medal at the Ontario University Athletics
(OUA) Cross-Country Running Championships in Ottawa this past weekend.

Competing on a challenging 10 kilometre course at Mooney's Bay Park,
Proudfoot finished the race in a time of 30 minutes, 53 seconds, just 2
seconds behind University of Guelph teammate and gold medallist, Andrew
Nixon (Thunder Bay). North Bay's Matt Walters, competing for the University
of Windsor won the bronze medal.

Proudfoot ran with the front pack of 10 to12 runners for the first eight
kilometres of the race which included four major climbs and short sections
run on beach sand. Nixon, Proudfoot and Walters demonstrated their northern
Ontario running strength as they eventually pulled away from the lead back
and battled for the medals over the last 2 kilometers.

"I'm pretty happy with my race. It's an improvement on my 4th place finish
last year. I made a slight mental error by not staying connected with Nixon
when he made his final surge with about 700 metres to go but I still
finished strong and I feel I'll be ready for a strong race at Nationals"
commented Proudfoot following the race.

Proudfoot and his Guelph Gryphon teammates won their 7th consecutive OUA
title with a low score of 20 points. Windsor was second with a score of 40
points and Queen's claimed bronze with 103 points.

Proudfoot will next compete at the Canadian Interuniversity (CIS)
Cross-Country Championships being held on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec
City on November 12th.

"Moore wins silver at National Legion Track and Field Championships"

National Legion Track and Field Championships

Track North Athletic Club's Keegan Moore (Sudbury), 15, won a silver medal
at the National Legion Track and Field Championships contested this past
weekend in Ottawa. Competing in the boys U16 javelin event, Moore's best
throw of 45.13 metres earned him the silver medal. Aaron Stroda of British
Columbia won the gold with a best throw of 51.23 metres.

"Keegan was very well composed during his first national championship. His
first throw wasn't as far as he hoped but he battled back in the third
round. Keegan is a newcomer to this event so I am excited to see what next
season will bring with more training" commented Track North jumps and throws
coach, Jim Taylor.

Other Track North results included Matt Taylor and Sean Moore placing 9th
and 17th respectively in the U18 Triple Jump.

This competition marked the end of national age class track and field
competitions that saw Track North athletes win five medals including one
gold, three silver and one bronze in addition to four other Top-10 placings
(see below).

Also - Track North's Andrew Ellerton is currently preparing for the IAAF
World Track and Field Championships to be held in Daegu, South Korea from
August 27th to September 4th. Ellerton will compete in the 800 metre event.

Athletics Ontario Senior Track and Field Championships

Ottawa, Ontario, July 16-17, 2011

Two members of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club competed at the Athletics Ontario Senior (20-and-over) Track and Field Championships in Ottawa this weekend.

Hanmer's Ashley Huard, only 17 and competing up an age category, continued her remarkable streak of medal performances by winning a bronze medal in the 100 metre event. Her time was 12.09.

Alicia Violin, 19 and also from Hanmer, competed in the long jump, leaping a personal-best 5.17 for an 8th-place finish.

Track North Wins 3 Medals at National Juniors

Medal Haul for Track North at the Canadian Juniors

Six athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club competed at the Canadian Junior (Under 20) Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg this weekend, returning with three medals and 3 top-eight finishes.

Ross Proudfoot nailed down a berth on Canada's Pan-American Junior Games team by winning a silver medal in the 1500 metres. In the highly tactical race, Proudfoot suffered through a slow pace for the first 800 metres, then took control and led the field for the remainder of the race. He fought off several attacks on the home stretch only to be passed at the line by a hard-charging Rob Denault of the Newmarket Huskies. Proudfoot's time was 4:05.15.

Seventeen-year old Ashley Huard of Hanmer surprised the national sprinting ranks by winning a silver medal in he 100 metre dash. Showing incredible poise in her first national championship, Huard advanced through three rounds of competition over two days, winning her heat with a time of 12.3; then placing second in her semi-final with a 12.12. She saved her best for the final, exploding from the blocks and moving into third place at the 60m mark. She then surged over the final 10 metres to narrowly out-lean Edmonton's Isatu Fofanah by 1/100th of a second. Her silver medal time was 11.95, which matched her personal best, set at Sudbury's OFSAA Track and Field Championships.

Katie Wismer's bronze medal in the 2000 metre steeplechase was another surprise, with Wismer running an 18-second personal best to place ahead of both the gold and bronze medalists from OFSAA. Using a risky but effective technique over the waterpits, Wismer ran in fifth place until the final lap, where she moved through the pack to her medal finish and a time of 7:12.87. Wismer, a Lockerby Secondary graduate, will compete for Laurentian University this Fall.

Jeremy Cooper improved on last year's 11th place finish in the 5000 metres, running a personal-best 15:12.97 to cross the finish line in 5th place. Cooper ran with the lead pack until the final kilometer, where the top-three runners broke from the pack. Cooper fought off all but one runner in the chase pack as he kicked down the home stretch.

Alicia Violin of Hanmer placed 6th in the triple jump, with a breakthrough personal-best leap of 11.46 metres on her fourth round of jumping. It was a significant improvement over last year as Violin, better known as a gymnast and in only her second year of jumps training, did not make the top-12 final last year. Violin also placed 16th in the long jump with a distance of 5.14 metres.

Matt Taylor, only 17 and competing up an age category, broke into the nation's top ranks by finishing eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.06 metres.

Espanola's Caroline Ehrhardt, representing the London Western track club, placed 1st in both the long jump and triple jump, with distances of 5.74 and 12.78 metres respectively. Erhardt will join Ross Proudfoot on the Pan-American Junior Games team.

"It was an amazing nationals for us," said Track North jumps coach Jim Taylor. "It's a large country with excellent talent, and to have six Track North athletes return as national medalists and three others finish in the top-eight is a major accomplishment."

Firecracker 5k Road Race Results

Also thanks to Vince & Lise Perdue, Judy and Katelyn Roberts, Bill Thompson, Frank and Sally Lesk, Verna Tallman, Karen and Dale Caverson, the Maziarski clan, Dr. Lawrie Oliphant, Amanda Kosmerly, and the many other volunteers who came out to help!

The race raised $1300 for the Laurentian Women's XC/Track team!

Ellerton - 1:45.04!!!

Andrew Ellerton won the 800m at the Harry Jerome Invitational tonight with a breakthrough time of 1:45.04!!!!! That crushes his old PB and breaks the "A" standard for selection to the World Championships.

Andrew now has only to run a time of 1:46.30 (the B-Standard) in order to qualify for Worlds to be held in Daegu Korea on August 27-September 4.

And...he won the race.

Ehrhardt Medals at National Track Championships

Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships
Calgary Alberta
June 23-25, 2011

Espanola native and Track North alumni, Caroline Ehrhardt, won a gold medal in
the triple jump at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships in Calgary
Alberta this weekend.

Representing the London Western Track Club, Erhardt jumped 12.64 metres to win
her first senior championship. She also placed 7th in the long jump with a leap
of 5.79 metres.

Ellerton Wins His 2nd National Championship

Ellerton Wins His Second National Championships

Sudbury native, Andrew Ellerton, won his second senior national title at the Canadian Track and Field Championships this weekend. Ellerton, who trains in Victoria and Phoenix, but maintains his affiliation with Track North Athletic Club, entered the meet as the defending 800 metre champion and left with his second consecutive championship.

Running in heavy winds, Ellerton took the lead after 300m of a pedestrian pace, surging at the 400m mark, then unleashing his kick with 100m to go, eventually pulling away in the final 40 metres for the win. His splits were 58 seconds for the first 400m and 52 for the second, for a final time of 1:52.12.

Ellerton now participates in two more domestic meets before leaving for a month of European competition in July.

Ross Proudfoot, still a Junior but competing in his first Senior track nationals, became involved in a tactical semi-final, was out-kicked down the homestretch and did not qualify for the final. He placed 17th with a time of 3:54.26.

"Proudfoot approaching sub-4 minute mile"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, 18 (Lively, ON) has taken another
step closer to eclipsing the elusive sub 4 minute mile barrier.

Competing in the "metric mile" 1,500 metre distance at the American Miler's High
Performance Series in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday night, Proudfoot ran to
a new personal best of 3 minutes, 45.00 seconds. This equates to a mile time of
4:02.

The race was won by fellow Canadian and 2008 Olympian, Taylor Milne of Calendar,
ON in a time of 3 minutes 38.78 seconds.

Proudfoot's time keeps him ranked first in the national junior (age 19 and
under) rankings. Proudfoot's next competition will be the Canadian Senior
Championships in Calgary, June 24th and 25th.

Results: Ontario Junior Championships & National Qualifier track meet

York University Track, Toronto

June 10-11, 2011

Eleven athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club competed at the Ontario Junior Championships and National Qualifier track and field meet in Toronto this weekend.

Ashley Huard, fresh from a bronze medal performance at the OFSAA Championships in Sudbury, continued her remarkable climb up the national sprint rankings, running a personal best 11.95 in the 100m to win a silver medal. Huard's time was only .05 seconds from the qualifying standard for the Pan-American Junior Championships and ranks her second in the National Junior rankings. Huard also placed 17th in the 200m with a personal best time of 25.72.

Teammate, Emma Tallman, who competes for both Track North and Laurentian University, also set a personal best in winning a bronze medal in the open women's 1500m. Tallman's new mark of 4:37.61 was 10 seconds better than her former best time. Tallman also placed 6th in the 800m with a time of 2:16.57.

Andrew Athanasopolous, marked his return to javelin competition by placing 3rd in the open men's javelin with a distance of 49.65 metres.

Ross Proudfoot, dropping down a distance, placed 4th in the 800m with a time of 1:53.21.

Matt Taylor placed 6th in the Junior Men's triple jump with a huge personal best leap of 13.13 metres. He also placed 17th in the long jump with a jump of 5.45m

Grace Thomson, a finalist at the OFSAA track championships, made the finals over a higher hurdle height at this competition, placing 7th in a time of 15.53.

Jeremy Cooper placed 7th in the Junior Men's 5000m, with a time of 15:36.74. and training partner, Chantry Cargill placed 7th in the Open Men's 5000m with a time of 15:44.98.

Alicia Violin placed 13th in the Junior women's long jump with a leap of 5.07m. She also placed 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.12m. Fellow jumper, Sean Moore, placed 13th in the Junior Men's long jump with a leap of 5.75 and 9th in the triple jump with a distance of 12.49m.

Brandon Shirk, hampered by a sore hamstring, ran 51.99 in the 400m heats but was forced to withdraw from the final.

Track North alumni, Caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola, now competing for London Western, won both the LJ and TJ with jumps of 5.98 and 12.66m.

Congratulations to TNOR and LU coach, Darren Jermyn, for winning the Coach of the Year award at the Sudbury House of Kin Sports Celebrity Awards dinner last night.

A number of other Track North members and alumni were represented, with Devon Kershaw winning the Amateur Elite Athlete of the Year, Katie Wismer nominated for the Female High School Athlete of the Year, Eric Leishman for the Import Athlete of the Year and Track North itself nominated for Team of the Year. Vince Perdue, who frequently assists TNOR & LU host road and XC races, was nominated for the Administration Award.

Proudfoot Breaks Canadian Record

Track North Press Release: "Proudfoot Breaks Canadian Record"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, 18 (Lively, ON) broke the
longstanding Canadian Junior Record for 2,000 metres at the Speed River
Inferno Track Meet this past weekend in Guelph, ON.

Competing in a field that included 2008 Olympian, Taylor Milne and 2009
World Championship competitor Reid Coolsaet, Proudfoot ran to a finishing
time of 5 minutes, 16.06 seconds. This bettered the previous national
junior record of 5:19.9 set by Rob Lonergan in the 1970's. Milne won the
race in a time of 5 minutes, 1.57 seconds, breaking the national senior
record in the process. Coolsaet finished second in 5:15.39, with Proudfoot
claiming the bronze.

The 2000m race is rarely contested in North America but the organizers of
the Inferno meet put the event on the schedule in hopes of attracting a
quality field of Canadian and American middle distance runners to chase down
their national records.

"Reid and I worked well together to keep our splits even over the first four
laps and then we both had something left in the tank on that last lap to
push hard for home. I'm incredibly happy to have broken such a longstanding
record" commented Proudfoot following the race.

"Ross has had an amazing week" commented Proudfoot's Track North coach,
Darren Jermyn. "In a span of seven days, he's set new personal bests in the
1500m and 800m and claimed a national junior record. Not a bad way to kick
off the season!"

Emma Tallman, 20 (Mindemoya, ON) won a silver medal in the Women's 800m
event setting a new personal best time of 2 minutes, 12.83 seconds.

"Ellerton and Proudfoot Ranked #1 Nationally"

Track North Athletic Club's Andrew Ellerton and Ross Proudfoot are both ranked #1 in Canada following their outstanding performances this past weekend.

Ellerton,28, competing in the 800m event at the USATF High Performance Meet at Occidental College in California, finshed with a time of 1 minute 46.39 seconds. This placed him 9th overall in the competition but will rank him number one in Canada when the updated Athletics Canada rankings are released later today. A video of his race is at:

Jeremy Cooper sets 3000m PB at Rowland Games

Track North's Jeremy Cooper, competing for Manitoulin Secondary ran to a new
personal best over 3000m this weekend at the Nike Rowland Games Invitational
3000m at Etobicoke Stadium. Jeremy's time of 8:41.67 placed him 12th

Way to go, Rebecca Johnston! In the final game at the World Women's hockey championships, Rebecca scored with only four minutes left to take the game into overtime. Team USA scored in OT to win the championship, but it was an excellent showing by both Team Canada and Rebecca, who scored four goals in five games and was Team Canada's top scorer.

Congratulations also, to Alannah MacLean. Alannah, who placed 3rd in the Canadian Junior Nordic Skiing Championships this winter (in the 7.5km), has been selected to enter the National Training Centre for Nordic skiing in Thunder Bay. She's one of only three female skiers who will attend the centre. Alannah moves to T-Bay in early July.

Proudfoot starts outdoor season with 5k race in California

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) will open his 2011
outdoor track and field season this weekend by competing at the Payton
Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford University in Paolo Alto, California.

Proudfoot will compete in the 5000m event against elite level university
athletes from across North America.

Proudfoot, who just completed his first year of competing for the University
of Guelph, commented prior to departing for California, "After a few weeks
of being sick during my final exams, I've had a solid week of training back
home with my Track North teammates and I'm ready to see what I can do very
early in the season."

Following his race at Stanford, Proudfoot will attend a national team
training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona for two weeks. There he will train
alongside fellow Track North athlete, Andrew Ellerton, who is also preparing
for the upcoming outdoor season.

Johnston, is playing in the semi-finals today. You can see her at 10:00 AM on
TSN against Finland.

Rebecca was instrumental in getting the squad to the semis - in their previous
game, also against Finland, Canada was able to score only two goals against a
hot goaltender. Rebecca's goal was the first and the winner.

Jeremy Cooper 7th at Harry's Spring Run-Off 8km Road Race

Track North's Jeremy Cooper placed 7th in a field of 2,226 runners at the
Harry's Spring Run-Off 8km race in Toronto's High Park this past weekend.

Jeremy set a personal best on the hilly course with a time of 26:38. Jeremy

Proudfoot Top Canadian at World Championships

"Proudfoot Top Canadian at IAAF World Cross Country Championships"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, (Lively, ON) was the top
finishing Canadian at the 39th IAAF World Cross-Country Championships
contested today in Punta Umbria, Spain. Competing in the Junior's Men's
8 kilometre race, Proudfoot finished in 49th position with a time of 24
minutes and 53 seconds. Canada placed 12th in the team event beating out
teams from Spain, Algeria, Russia, Brazil and Tunisia. As expected Kenya
and Ethiopia battled it out for top spot with Kenya eventually taking the
gold and Ethiopia settling for silver. Uganda won bronze.

Canada entered teams in both the men's and women's junior (19 and under) and
senior races and Proudfoot's performance was the best of any Canadian on the
day.

"Ross had a great race. He went out confidently, took a risk with a fast
start and hung on well. He had a good battle going with some of the
Americans and finished strongly" commented Team Canada Head Coach, Dave
Scott-Thomas following the race.

Proudfoot could not be reached for comment immediately following the race
and is currently in transit back to Canada.

"To place in the top half of what is considered the hardest running race in
the world to win, and to again lead the Canadian team is an impressive
accomplishment" commented Proudfoot's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn.
"Ross has come a long way in the past year and its exciting to think of what
he will do in the future."

This race caps off an incredible past 8 months that saw Proudfoot accomplish
the following:
- 14th place over 5000m at IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships

"Proudfoot Wins Bronze at Canadian University Championships"
"Breaks 3:50 barrier over 1500m"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON), competing for the
University of Guelph, claimed the bronze medal in the men's 1500m event at
the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Indoor Track and Field
Championships held this weekend in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Proufoot made a strong move over the final 200 metres of the race to move
from fifth place into a potential medal position. Proudfoot then timed his
final lean at the line perfectly to win the bronze medal in a new personal
best time of 3 minutes, 49.68 seconds, just outleaning the fourth place
finisher by 2/100's of a second. Proudfoot's teammate, Kyle Boorsma, won
gold in a time of 3 minutes, 47.57 seconds.

"I ended up eating a bit of track with my lean and fall at the finish line
but I very happy to have won a medal and to have finally broken 3:50 for
1500m - it's been overdue" commented Proudfoot following the race.

Proudfoot also finished 5th in the men's 3000m event in a time of 8 minutes,
19.48 seconds.

Proudfoot will now turn his focus to again competing for Canada at the IAAF
World Junior Cross-Country Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain on March
20th. Proudfoot will lead the Canadian squad against the world's best 19
and under cross country athletes over an 8 kilometre race.

Caroline Ehrhardt (Espanola, ON) also had an impressive rookie debut at the
CIS Championships, earning fourth place finishes in both the women's long
jump and triple jump. Competing for the University of Western Ontario
(UWO), Ehrhardt set a new indoor personal best of 5.81 metres in the long
jump and also set a season's best of 12.38 metres in the triple jump event.
Her triple jump mark also broke the UWO school record in the event.

Kershaw Wins World Championship Gold

Congratulations to Devon Kershaw, who has won a first-ever gold medal for male
skiers at a World XC Skiing Championships!

Devon and partner Pierre Harvey won their medal in Norway in a race in which two
partners make three loops of a 1.5 km track. Devon moved from the back of the
pack to hand off Harvey in 3rd place at the final exchange. Harvey brought it
home for gold in an exciting finish, outkicking the favourite Norwegions on
their home course (in front of the Norwegian king).

"Proudfoot wins international race - claims NACAC gold"

Track North's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) won his first gold medal in international competition this past weekend by running to first place at the NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Junior Cross Country Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Competing as part of Team Canada, Proudfoot covered the 6km course in 18 minutes, 26.74 seconds to claim gold. Proudfoot finished just ahead of teammates Connor Darlington (Toronto, ON) and Paul Janikowski (Windsor, ON) as Canada swept the medals and took the team title, ahead of the United States and Puerto Rico.

By virtue of their performance, Proudfoot and his teammates will represent Canada next month at the IAAF World Cross-Country Running Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain.

"My plan for the race was to start easier and pick it up as I went. I didn't want to push too hard early with the heat and have a rough back end of the race. The race played out really nice for me and had a relatively comfortable first 3 kilometres and I was able to really push the pace on the last kilometer to take the gold" commented Proudfoot following the race.

When asked about what it was like to win his first international competition, he noted: "It was a really neat experience being able to stand on top of an international podium, but what was even better is I got to do it with the rest of my team as we swept the podium and won the championship. All of team Canada was from Ontario so I got to race alongside all of the guys I'm normally up against and being able to drop the last American with my two other teammates and sweep the medals was definitely the coolest thing I've ever been a part of in any race."

With respect to qualifying for the World Championships - "It was great to be able to book our seat for Worlds, we have a strong team that works really good together so we should be able to do very well for a Canadian team and hopefully will mix it up with some of the teams in the top half of the event."

Prior to heading off to Spain, Proudfoot will complete his first year of university indoor track competition with the provincial OUA championships this upcoming weekend in Toronto and the national CIS Championships March 10-12 in Sherbrooke, QC.

Less than a week after capturing his first gold medal in international
competition at the North American, Central American and Caribbean
Cross-Country championships in Trinidad, Track North Athletic Club's Ross
Proudfoot (Lively, ON) returned to the Ontario University indoor track
circuit to claim gold in the 3000m event at the OUA Championships contested
this past weekend at York University.

Competing for the University of Guelph, Proudfoot made a definitive move
with 600 metres remaining to break free of the lead pack and claimed the
gold medal in a new personal best time of 8 minutes 16.95 seconds. Paul
Janikowski (8:20.75) and Matt Walters (8:22.51) of the University of Windsor
took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

"The goal going into the race was to better the CIS standard of 8:20 and
contribute as many points towards our team score" commented Proudfoot
following the race. "I ran an even race from the gun and the leaders
eventually came back to me with about 800 metres to go. I felt confident I
could kick from far out so I pushed hard with 3 laps to go and then again on
the last lap."

Proudfoot also claimed the bronze medal in the 1500m event on Saturday,
running an indoor personal best of 3 minutes, 51.41 seconds. Guelph
teammate, Kyle Boorsma took the gold in 3 minutes, 49.32 seconds.

Caroline Ehrhardt (Espanola, ON), competing for the University of Western
Ontario also had in impressive rookie debut at the Ontario Championships by
claiming two medals in the horizontal jumping events. Ehrhardt won a silver
medal in the long jump with a best jump of 5.67 metres. Neb Zachariah of
the University of Windsor won the event with a best jump of 5.70 metres.
Ehrhardt also claimed a bronze medal in the triple jump with a best jump of
12.24 metres.

Emma Tallman (Mindemoya, ON), competing for Laurentian University earned two
top-10 places finishes at the OUA Championships. Tallman ran the 1000m
event in a time of 2 minutes, 57.56 seconds, finishing 9th. She also came
9th in the 600m event with a final time of 1 minute 36.30 seconds.

Track North's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) will again compete for Canada this upcoming weekend at the North American Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross-Country Running Championships in Trinidad.

Proudfoot and his junior aged (19 and under) teammates will compete over a 6 kilometre course at Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Saturday, Feb 19th.

Team anticipated to compete include: United States, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and Canada.

Proudfoot qualified for Team Canada by winning the Canadian National Junior Cross-Country Championships last November in Guelph, ON.

Currently in his first year at the University of Guelph, Proudfoot last competed for Canada at the World Junior Track and Field Championships last July in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Q and A with Ross Proudfoot:

What does it mean to represent you country again?
"Being able to wear the Canadian jersey has been the biggest moment in my running career so far, so to be able to once again represent Canada in the same year is even more exciting for me."

How have you prepared for this competition?
"Having already had the chance to compete in international competition definitely has helped me prepare mentally for this event. I know what to expect at events like this, and should be very comfortable heading into my race. As for training before this competition it has been a little harder to prepare for as I have also been running an indoor track season as well as had some injury problems. But despite that, I've still been able to get outside and get some good cross country workouts in, and have also been running running quite well on the track."

What are your expectations for this competition?
"Looking at the times from the United States nationals and how the competition normally plays out at this event, I'm looking at running up with the front group and seeing how it plays out."

Proudfoot's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, noted:

"Ross appears to have overcome his injury woes in December and early January and is running very well right now. He has set new personal bests over both the mile and 3000m distances on the university indoor track circuit already this winter so I anticipate the jump up to 6 kilometres will not be a major issue."

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON), competing for the
University of Guelph bettered the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)
national qualifying standard for the 1500m event this past weekend at the
GaREAT College Invitational in Geneva Ohio this past weekend.

Competing in the traditional mile event (1609m) against several top NCAA
ranked schools, Proudfoot finished 10th in a time of 4 minutes 8.75 seconds.
This time is equivalent to a 3:50.55 1500m and is an indoor personal best
for Proudfoot and qualifies him to compete at the CIS Indoor National
Championships in Sherbrooke, March 10-12.

"The injuries that slowed me down in December and early January have
thankfully healed up and I'm starting to feel much stronger now. I ran a
very even race today and felt comfortable running fast again. I really only
a few weeks of solid interval training under my belt this season so I'm
excited to see what I can do in my upcoming races" commented Proudfoot.

Proudfoot continues to train for both the Canadian university indoor track
season in addition to preparing to compete for Canada at the North
American-Caribbean Cross Country Championships being contest in Trinidad on
February 19th.

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) competing for the
University of Guelph ran to a silver medal in the 3000m event at the McGill
Team Challenge Indoor Track and Field Meet held in Montreal this past
weekend.

Proudfoot finished the race in a time of 8 minutes and 22.33 seconds, a new
personal best time over the 3 kilometre distance. Proudfoot's Guelph
teammate, Alex Genest won the race in 8:14.96.

This was Proudfoot's first indoor track race of the season as he has been
hobbled by injuries since winning the National Junior Cross-Country
Championship last November.

Proudfoot commented: "I didn't really know what to expect for the race
because I didn't know how fit I was coming in. I've really only had one
solid track workout this season. The race plan was to run with the top
ranked guys in the race and see what I could do in the last kilometer. We
went through two kilometres slower then planned but I ended up having a
really strong final kilometer to finish in a new personal best time."

Proudfoot will continue to train for both the university indoor track season
in addition to preparing to compete for Canada at the North
American-Caribbean Cross-Country Championships on February 19th.

Devon Kershaw - Gold and 2 Silvers!!!

What a week for alumni, Devon Kershaw! Devon, a national team nordic skier, won
a gold medal in the 1.3 km sprint in the final World Cup Tour de Ski race in
Italy yesterday. It's the perfect finale for an incredible series of races in
which he won two silvers and placed 7th in another race. And to make it even
sweeter, Devon twice outkicked Olympic gold medalist, Petter Northug, who is
renowned for his kick. In the five Tour de Ski races, Devon won a gold, two
silvers and a 7th!

Guelph, ON, November 28th, 2010

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) won his first national championship this weekend by taking the gold medal in the Junior Men's (19 and under) ASGI Canadian Cross-Country Running Championships in Guelph, ON.

Competing on a snow covered 8 kilometre course, Proudfoot made a decisive move with just over 1.5 kilometres left in the race to take the lead and eventually win the race in a time of 24 minutes and 27 seconds. Luc Bruchet of British Columbia finished 2nd, 10 seconds behind Proudfoot and Rob Denault of Newmarket finished 3rd.

As a result of his finish, Proudfoot claimed a spot on the national team that will compete at the NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbean) Cross-Country Championships next February in Trinidad and the World Cross-Country Championships next March in Spain.

Proudfoot commented following the race: "I stuck to my game plan going into the race. I ran with the lead group of runners from the first five kilometres of the race and by that point the lead pack was down to three runners. I knew I didn't want to leave it to a final kick so I made my move with about a mile to go to the finish. I pushed hard over the final 500m of the race and up the final hill to ensure I was clear. I'm extremely happy to have won my first ever national championship and to get another chance to represent Canada at international competitions."

Proudfoot's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn commented: "Ross has had a truly dream season. He was the OUA and CIS rookie of the year and became the first university rookie to ever win the Western International. I've seen him win medals at a lot of major track and cross-country competitions but today's performance was perhaps his most impressive as he not only used his outstanding fitness, but he ran a tactically perfect race. Ross was 14th at this race last year but he has done all the work needed over the past 12 months to claim his first national championship. In fact, he is the first Track North athlete to ever win a national cross-country title."

Emma Tallman, (Mindemoya, ON) capped off her own remarkable season by finishing 23rd in the Junior Women's race. Tallman covered the 5 kilometre race in a time of 18 minutes and 56 seconds. The junior women's race started just after a major snowfall blanketed the course with approximately 8 centimetres of snow. A congested start left Tallman in mid-pack for the first kilometre and having to fight back throughout the race.

"I pushed really hard over the final half of the race and moved from about 38th spot up to 23rd. It's my final competition as a junior-aged athlete so I'm really happy with my result. I can't wait for the indoor track season to start!" commented Tallman following the race.

Proudfoot CIS Rookie of the Year, All Canadian

"Proudfoot CIS Rookie of the Year and All Canadian"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON), competing for the University of Guelph capped a remarkable rookie season by finishing 6th at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Cross-Country Running Championship contested today in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Proudfoot earned CIS Rookie of the Year and 1st team All-Canadian by virtue of his finish. Proudfoot's University of Guelph team also took home the team gold medal with a best low score of 24 points.

The championship 10 kilometre race was contested on a rolling and muddy course at the Sherbrooke Golf Club. Proudfoot's finishing time was 32 minutes 46 seconds. Proudfoot's teammate, Kyle Boorsma, took home the gold medal in a time of 31 minutes 53 seconds.

Proudfoot commented following the race: "The conditions were really tough today. The hills were slow and muddy and the footing was rough in many sections but I'm extremely happy to have won the CIS rookie of the year and help my team to its fifth straight national championship."

Track North coach Darren Jermyn noted: "Ross really proved he is among the elite in the CIS today. The course conditions were definitely challenging and Ross fought hard over the last three kilometres to earn his All-Canadian status. He has just flourished at Guelph and it's exciting to know that he has many years left to move even higher up the CIS ladder."

Proudfoot's first season of university competition saw him win the Western International, earn top rookie status at the Paul Short Invitational and finish 4th at the Ontario University (OUA) championships.

Proudfoot's final cross-country race of the season will be at the Athletics Canada Junior (19 and under) Championships in Guelph on November 27th. He will compete alongside his Track North teammates as he bids for a spot on the national team that will compete at the North American Caribbean Championships (NACAC) next February in Trinidad and the World Championships next March in Spain.

Note: Other fine northern Ontario results included Matt Walters (North Bay) competing for the University of Windsor, who finished 7th and Andrew Nixon (Thunder Bay) competing for the University of Guelph, who finished 11th.

Track North OFSAA XC Results!

The OFSAA XC Championships were held this past Saturday, November 6th at Centennial Park in Etobicoke.

The weather was just about perfect (sunny but cool) and several Track North athletes had some fantastic peformances!

Note: Each race had approximately 240 runners in the field.

Leading the charge was Jeremy Cooper (Manitoulin Secondary) who finished an outstanding 9th in a VERY deep Senior Boys 7000m field. Jeremy, who is still in grade 11, stated his goal was to finish in the top 10 and he ran a strategically perfect race to achieve this lofty goal.

Alannah Maclean (Lo-Ellen) ran a fantastic race and finished in 25th spot in the Senior Girls 5000m race. Running a consistent even pace paid off for Alannah who likely still has that huge smile she had following the race on her face today! Finishing very close behind Alannah was Katie Wismer (Lockerby) in 39th place. Katie also ran a very smart race, keeping herself connected with the lead groups throughout the race.

Michael Niven (Manitoulin Secondary) saved his finest race of the season for OFSAA where he finished in a solid 53rd spot in the Junior Boys 6000m race.

Despite losing a shoe in the mass confusion of the start area, Emily Marcolini easily ran the gutsiest race of the day! Having to stop and get her shoe back on (and therefore lose over 180m to the entire field), Emily pressed hard from the start and passed a whopping 182 girls in the Junior Girls 3800m race to finish in 42nd spot. On a "normal shoe" day, this was a top 10 performance!

"Proudfoot's Solid XC Season Continues in Oregon"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON),competing in his rookie season for the nation's top ranked cross-country running team at the University of Guelph, turned in another solid performance at the Bill Dellinger Invitational contested at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

Competing on the legendary Prefontaine Trails, Proudfoot finished the 8 kilometre race in 14th place in a career best time of 24 minutes and 15 seconds.

Proudfoot's Guelph team finished an impressive 3rd place in a field that included top ranked NCAA Division I schools, the University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin.

University of Guelph coach Dave Scott-Thomas commented: "Ross ran another fantastic race. That he is talented is not a surprise; that he runs with a such composure and confidence is. He's showing the poise of a veteran our there, and making a great case for himself as a CIS rookie of the year candidate. He'll get faster yet this season, too. What a great addition to our team!"

Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented: "For those unfamiliar with the 8km distance - you can look at it this way, Ross passed through 5 kilometres just a shade over 15 minutes and then continued at that incredible pace for another 3 kilometres."

"Proudfoot Top Rookie at Major NCAA XC Meet"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, competing for Canada's number one ranked university cross-country running team, the University of Guelph, continued his excellent start to the intercollegiate season with a 22nd place at the Paul Short Invitational contested this past weekend at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

In a large field of 387 runners from 42 top ranked universities in both the NCAA and CIS, Proudfoot was the first rookie to cross the finish line in the rain-soaked 8 kilometre event. Proudfoot's finishing time was 24 minutes and 28 seconds. Sam Chelanga, the defending NCAA Division I Cross-Country Running Champion from Liberty University won the event in a time of 23 minutes and 34 seconds.

Proudfoot's University of Guelph team finished 5th overall in the team competition.

"I felt really good the whole time but maybe started a bit too far back off the start. Although I had a major kick I couldn't quite crack the top 20 but I'm really happy with my time and how my season is going so far", commented Proudfoot following the race.

Proudfoot will next compete at the Bill Dellinger Invitational at the University of Oregon on October 16th.

"Proudfoot wins Western International XC Race"

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot, competing for the University of
Guelph won the prestigious 36th Annual Western International cross-country
running race today at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, ON.

Competing against a star-studded field that included several All-Canadians from
14 universities in Ontario and a strong Central Michigan team, Proudfoot claimed
the gold medal by covering the men's rolling 10 kilometre course in a time of
was 31 minutes and 50 seconds.

A graduate of Lo-Ellen Park, Proudfoot ran with the large pack of lead runners
for the first 6 kilometres of the race before breaking away with a small lead
pack of three runners. Proudfoot made a strong surge with just under a one
kilometre to the finish to distance himself from the eventual silver medallist,
Terefe Ejigu of Central Michigan University.

Proudfoot commented following the race:

"I felt really good. The first five kilometres felt relaxed and when the leaders
put in a surge at 6km I knew I could match it. Once I caught them, the pace
actually slowed a bit and I knew I had a chance for the win so with a kilometre
to go I decided to push hard for home. I'm extremely happy with my finish as
this is the first university race of my career and the first time I've race 10
kilometres in cross-country."

"We have a really deep team at Guelph and I feel I'm adjusting well to their
training program. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

Proudfoot's Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented:

"Ross' performance today was simply incredible. I've seen him win a lot of big
races but he's never faced this type of competition in a cross-country race
before. Not many rookies have ever won this race but he handled himself like a
seasoned veteran out there."

Proudfoot and his Guelph teammates, currently ranked number one in Canada, will
next compete at the Paul Short Invitational in Lehigh Pennsylvania on Oct 2nd.

Track North Runner Meets U.S. President

This article refers to the sister of current LU runner, Emma Tallman:

It has been quite a month for Track North distance runner, Kaitlyn Toohey (nee Tallman). In late August, she stood on the lawn of her Mindemoya home, taking her wedding vows. This Monday, she stood on the White House lawn, shaking hands with U.S. president, Barack Obama.

Toohey, a member of Villanova University's 2009 NCAA champion women's cross-country running team, was invited to the White House to participate in a reception for the all of the nation's collegiate championship teams.

With 650 athletes in attendance, face-time was minimal, but Toohey was able to get close enough to the president to shake his hand.

"I had to fight my way through the crowd and be especially careful since I was standing beside a football player with his arm in a sling, but Obama shook my hand and said, "Nice to meet you." He also told the football player beside me to take care of his arm. I am thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it was a special honour for our team, and the other championship winning teams, to be recognized by the president of the United States,"" said Toohey of her presidential encounter.

Toohey, now a Villanova graduate, is currently in the Occupational Therapy program at McMaster University, in Hamilton.

Ellerton Wins Silver in Final Meet in Italy

Ellerton Wins Silver in Final Meet in Italy

Andrew Ellerton completed his 2010 track season with a silver medal in the 800m at the Città Di Padova meet in Padova, Italy. His time was 1:46.77.

Running mid-pack for most of the race, Ellerton, with 100m to go, found himself behind a pack of six runners, including Olympic silver 1500m medalist, Nick Willis and American record holder in the mile, Alan Webb. In an exciting finish, Ellerton made his move to the outside down the homestretch, making a final burst with 20m to go to pass all but the leader.

The race was won by former world championship 800m finalist, Antonio Reina in 1:46.51

Andrew Ellerton competed in the Flanders Cup last weekend (Aug 14/10), in Kessel-Lo Belgium, coming second in the 800m with a season's-best time of 1:46.85. His next race is this Saturday in Dubnica, Slovakia, where he'll race a 1000m.

Ryan Normand Wins Special Olympics Medals

Congratulations to TNOR athlete, Ryan Normand, who recently competed in London
in the National Summer Games for Special Olympics. Ryan won two gold medals and
one silver medal, with gold in the 100m and 4 x 100m relay, and silver in the
shot put.

Two athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club achieved medal status at the Athletics Ontario Youth Championships for athletes 17-and-under in London this weekend.

Sudbury's Katie Wismer won a silver medal in the youth (17 and under) steeplechase, completing the 2000m course in 7:38.10 With that performance, Wismer qualified for the Canadian Youth Championships in Ottawa in two weeks.

Manitoulin Island's Jeremy Cooper won a bronze medal in the youth 3000m, with a time of 8:53.02. He also qualified for the Canadian Championships.

Zvia Mazal placed 22nd in the 15-&-Under 200m, qualifying for Nationals with a time of 27.62.

Ellerton Wins Gold on the Pacific Tour

Sudbury native, Andrew Ellerton, representing Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, struck double gold in two international track meets on Canada's "Pacific Tour" this week.

Ellerton won the 800m at the Harry Jerome Classic on Monday with a time of 1:47.49 and again at the Victoria International on Wednesday with a 1:47.18.

On running ahead of the pack in windy conditions during the final 150m of the Harry Jerome meet, Ellerton said, "I pride myself on coming from behind and sitting on people, but you can't run fast all the time like that. So it was my turn to do some work today. But that last 150..it's hard to push yourself when there's no-one left to chase."

"Proudfoot Punches Ticket to World Juniors; Ehrhardt Golden Again"

Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club capped its best ever performance
at a National Junior Track and Field Championships with two members
being selected to compete for Canada at the upcoming World Junior
Track and Field Championships.

Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) was selected to Team Canada today
following his silver medal peformance in the Men's 5000m event at the
Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships contested today in
Moncton. Proudfoot, competing in his first ever 5000m race on the
track, finished the race in a time of 14 minutes 43.35 seconds. In a
field of 27 runners, Proudfoot sat in 3rd place for the majority of
the race but finished with a strong kick over the final 600 metres to
earn his spot to represent Canada at the World Track and Field
Championships also being contested in Moncton from July 19th to 25th.
Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catherines won the race in 14:15.92.

Proudfoot, who also placed 4th in the 1500m event on Saturday, will
compete against the best 5000m competitors in the world on Saturday,
July 24th.

Caroline Ehrhardt (Espanola, ON) defended her Canadian Junior Triple
Jump title with a winning performance of 12.54 metres. This mark was
a remarkable 59 centimetres ahead of second place. Based on this
result, Ehrhardt will also compete for Canada in the triple jump at
the World Championships. Ehrhardt also qualified in the Long Jump
following her gold medal in that event on Saturday.

Ehrhardt will compete at the World Championships on Tuesday and
Wednesday, July 22nd and 23rd.

Following his race, Proudfoot commented: "I am really excited to
compete at the World Championships and have the opportunity to
represent my country." Regarding his race, he noted: "Today's race
went exactly as planned. We knew going in that if I finished in first
or second I had a good chance of being named to the team. I started
out strong and sat third until I felt confident I could kick for home."

Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented: "Ross ran the perfect race
today. We were concerned that the two 1500m races he ran earlier at
the championships would affect his performance but his tactics in the
race set him up perfectly to earn his spot on the Worlds Team and once again he
got the job done."

Long-time Track North coach Dick Moss noted: "We have had several
medallists at the National Junior Championships in the past but this
is definitely our finest peformance as a team at a national event. We
are ecstatic to have 2 athletes represent Canada later this month."

Other impressive results for Track North included:

Jeremy Cooper (Manitowaning, ON) also competed in the 5000m event and
finished in 11th spot with a final time of 15 minutes, 20.96 seconds.

Cooper noted: "This was my first Nationals and I'm very proud of both
my finishing time and position. I have two more years to compete at
this level and I look foward to moving up the ladder."

Emma Tallman (Mindemoya, ON) finished 3rd in the Womens' 800m
Consolation Final with a time 2:14.59. This ranked 15th overall in
the event.

Track North Athletic Club athletes Ross Proudfoot (Lively, ON) and Caroline
Ehrhardt (Espanola, ON) kicked off the first day of competition at the Canadian
National Junior Championships in Moncton, NB by qualifying for the finals in
each of their opening events of the weekend.

Proudfoot, competing in the Men's 1500m, placed 4th in his first round heat in
time of 4:03.05. A slow, tactical race from the gun, Proudfoot automatically
qualified for the final based on finishing in the top 5 of his heat. The final
goes on Saturday, July 4th at 2:15pm local time.

Proudfoot commented following his race: "The pace was extremely slow through the
first 800m and I knew if I stayed with the lead group of runners, I had a good
shot at making the finals. I felt very strong over my final lap and I'm ready
to go for broke tomorrow in the final."

Proudfoot's coach Darren Jermyn noted: "It got a bit tense over the final 100m
as there were 6 athletes vying for the top 5 spots but Ross did a great job
staying clear of any trouble during the first 3 laps and by closing his final
400m in 57 seconds, he showed he is ready to mix it up with the favourites in
the final."

Ehrhardt quickly qualified for the Women's Long Jump final by exceeding the
automatic qualifying distance of 5.55 metres with a first round jump of 5.58m.
Ehrhardt will compete in the final on Saturday, July 4th at 2:35pm local time.

Ehrhardt's coach Jim Taylor noted: "Caroline had a solid qualifying jump
tonight. Although well off her personal best, she was well back of the board at
takeoff and with some adjustments to her approach tomorrow, I think she is ready
to pop a big one".

This year's National Championships also serve as the trials for the World Junior
Track and Field Championships being held later this month in Moncton.

Proudfoot sets new 1500m Personal Best

Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot ran to a new personal best over 1500m at the Runner's Choice Distance Series "1500m Night" in London, Ontario on Friday night.

Competing in a deep field of Canadian university and NCAA all-stars, Proudfoot placed 8th in a time of 3 minutes 50.08 seconds. This finishing time was just shy of the World Junior Championship standard. Anthony Berkis of the Toronto Olympic Club won the race in a time of 3 minutes 42.81 seconds. Proudfoot's time ranks him 5th in the country for athletes aged 19 and under.

Proudfoot's next competition will be the National Junior Track and Field Championships bein contested in Moncton, NB July 2 -4th. This meet will serve as the final qualifying competition for the World Junior Championships also being held in Moncton at the end of July.
Sudbury played host to the World Junior Championships in 1988.

Proudfoot commented following the race: "I felt strong over the first 2 laps but slowed slightly on the 3rd lap and I couldn't quite make up the time over the final 300m. Despite that, I covered the last 100m better than I have all year.I look foward to competing in both the 1500m and 5000m events in Moncton next weekend."

Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented: "Ross continues to impress. He wasn't intimidated at all competing against a deep field of more seasoned and older runners. His training is progressing well and this race is an indication that he will be ready to compete with the favourites at the National Championships next week in Moncton".

Ellerton Breaks Four-Minute Mile in Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Indiana, July 16, 2010

Sudbury native, Andrew Ellerton, continued his comeback from injury this week, by breaking the four-minute mile in a meet in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ellerton displayed an impressive kick by bursting from the back of the pack on the backstretch and taking the lead with 150m to go. He won the race by almost 15 metres, with a time of 3:58. 85.

Ellerton, who retains his hometown affiliation with Track North Athletic Club, but trains with coach Wynn Gmitroski out of Victoria, B.C., competes next at the the Harry Jerome Classic, on July 5th in Burnaby BC, and the Victoria International on July 7th.

Alannah MacLean and Ross Proudfoot: Sudbury Amateur Athletes of the Year!

Track North was well represented at the Sudbury Kinsmen Sports Award held tonight at the Caruso Club.

Alannah MacLean won the Amateur Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Caroline Ehrhardt was also nominated in this category.

Ross Proudfoot won the Amateur Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Track North Alumni Rebecca Johnston and Devon Kershaw were also recognized for their outstanding performances at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Track North Results - OFSAA Track'10

It was an outstanding day for local track and field athletes at the Ontario High School Provincial OFSAA Championships contested at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON.

Caroline Ehrhardt, a grade 12 student at Espanola High School, broke her own Canadian Interscholastic Record in the Senior Girls Triple Jump competition, winning gold with a best jump of 12.78 metres. Competing in front of a packed stadium at the TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of the University of Western Ontario, Ehrhardt solidied her position as the best high school triple jumper in Canadian history with her third consecutive gold medal in triple jump in OFSAA competition. Ehrhardt also claimed the gold medal in Senior Girls long jump with a best performance of 5.87 metres.

Ross Proudfoot,a grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, ran to a silver medal in the Senior Boy's 1500m race, setting a new personal best of 3 minutes, 50.56 seconds. Making a gutsy move with 500 metres to go, Proudfoot separated himself from the field of twelve finalists being outkicked only in the final 50 metres by Rob Denualt of Newmarket. Proudfoot's finishing time is the second fastest high school 1500m time in Canada this year.

Other outstanding performances by local athletes include: Serena San Cartier's fourth place finish in the Senior Girls 100m hurdle race with a time of 14.62 seconds. Newcomer, Katie Wismer of Lockerby Composite's surprise eigth place finish with a time of 5 minutes 17.84 seconds in the Open Girls 1500m steeplechase.

Proudfoot claims bronze in OFSAA 3000m.

Ross Proudfoot, a grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School ran to a bronze medal in the Senior Boy's 3000m race today at the OFSAA Track and Field Championships being held in London, ON. In his final OFSAA track and field competition, Proudfoot battled with the lead pack of elite distance runners from across the province, eventually breaking away and earning the bronze medal with a new personal best time of 8 minutes 24.09 seconds. Proudfoot, who also won a silver medal in the 1500m event on Friday night, was the only senior boy athlete in the province to claim two medals in the middle distance events (800m, 1500m, 3000m). This caps a phenomenal season for Proudfoot that saw him break the Sudbury City and NOSSA 1500m and 3000m records. Proudfoot also won the prestigious Nike Rowland Games 3000m event in Toronto earlier this season.

Proudfoot will now concentrate on the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships being contested in Moncton, New Brunswick from July 2nd to 4th. The meet will serve as the qualification for the World Junior Track and Field Championships also being held in Moncton from July 22nd to 28th.

Alannah MacLean, a grade 11 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School had an outstanding final day at the OFSAA championships, earning a 7th place finish in the Senior Girls 400m hurdle event. MacLean, who just began hurdling this year, came into the competition ranked 18th, yet earned a place in the final after running an impressive morning heat time of 1 minute 4.45 seconds. Her time in the final was 1 minute 5.48 seconds.

Emily Marcolini, a grade 9 student at St. Benedict's Secondary School turned in the surprise performance of the day with a 7th place finish in the Midget Girls 3000m event. Marcolini charged to the front of the twenty-four competitor event and led the race for a few laps, pushing the field through a fast opening two kilometres. Marcolini's finishing time of 10 minutes 42.55 seconds was a 22 second personal best. Marcolini also finished 13th in the 1500m event.

Ross Proudfoot: "The pace was faster than expected but I was able to cover all the moves of the leaders and keep myself in contention. I'm ecstatic about running to a new personal best and earning another OFSAA medal in my last high school competition."

Alannah MacLean: "I am really excited with my races today. I hurdled extremely well in the morning heat and was able to finish strong and set a huge new personal best. I had a bit of difficulty with a few hurdles in the final but I'm very happy with placing seventh in the province in my first year running the event".

Emily Marcolini: "I felt really good at the start of the race and knew if I could stick with the leaders, I could run to a solid time and place well. This was my first OFSAA Track and Field experience and I look forward to my summer track season."

Windsor Open - Emma Qualifies for Nationals

Emma Tallman ran a personal best in the 800m and qualified for the Canadian Junior Championships, later this summer in Moncton, NB.

Emma's time of 2:12.96 broke the standard of 2:15.00 and currently ranks her 2nd in Canada in the 800m among Junior runners (19 and under). She placed 5th in the race, primarily against senior-aged athletes.

While Emma will be starting her third year of university in the Fall, she is still a Junior-aged athlete and what she possibly doesn't even know is that her indoor university times placed very highly in the Athletics Canada rankings. Her national rankings were as follows:

Kaitlyn Qualifies for NCAA East Regional Meet

Track North's Kaitlyn Tallman, in her final year at Villanova University, has qualified to run the 5000m at the NCAA Division I East Regional Track and Field Championships being contested next weekend at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

This meet serves as the final and only qualification for the NCAA Division I Championships being contested on June through at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon.

The 48 top ranked 5000m runners in the East region will be split into 2 equally seeded fields of 24 runners with the top 6 from each section (12 total) qualifying for the national champsionships.

Kaitlyn's best this season is an incredible 16:35.49 and ranks her 34th (and only 15 seconds from the 12th ranked runner).

She races Saturday, May 29th at 8:45pm.

Proudfoot races Olympian, sets new 1500m PB

Runner's Choice London Distance Series

Track North's Ross Proudfoot continued his impressive spring track season by running to a new personal best over 1500 metres at the high performance Runner's Choice London Distance Series track meet held in London, ON last night.

Racing in a field that included 2008 Canadian Olympic Track and Field team member Taylor Milne (Callendar, ON), Proudfoot finished in 5th place with a time of 3 minutes 52.36 seconds. This time is 5 seconds faster than his previous best over 1500m set earlier this winter at an indoor meet in Ottawa. Milne won the race in a time of 3 minutes 40.71 seconds.

"I felt strong the whole race but got a bit boxed in for a short section on the third lap as there was a pack of us all running around the same speed. I couldn't make my final move as early as I would have liked but I still finished strong and caught a few runners over the final lap. Overall, I'm very happy with my result and time" commented Proudfoot following his race.

"We knew the pace was going to be fast as the meet organizers brought in pacemakers to ensure the athletes covered the first 800m on a fast pace. Ross did a solid job tucking behind the pacemakers and hit all the splits we planned prior to the race. Ross has been training very hard this spring and the results of this work are now starting to show. He has run to three new personal bests over three different distances, 800m, 1500m and 3000m in his last three competitions" commented Track North coach, Darren Jermyn.
