Led by rookie, Kellie Laing's top-30 finish, Laurentian's women's cross-country team placed 8th out of 15 teams at the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, New York this weekend.
A fast start by Stephanie Flieler set the stage for the Lady Vees, almost all of whom ran personal bests over a 5k course. Laing placed 28th in team scoring, breaking the 20:00 barier with a time of 19:59. She was followed by Maggie Robins, 40th with a personal best time of 20:13, Hilary Kilbreath, 48th in 20:237 (PB), Stephanie Flieler, 52nd in 20:31, and Celeste Woods, 90th in 21:41 (PB)2q. Amanda Seed in 22:38 and Becky Van Zeyl in 23:31 finished as displacers. The race involved 163 runners from U.S. and Ontario universities.
The average time for Laurentian's five scoring runners was 20:34.
"I ran a conservative race," said Laing, of her relatively slow start," But I realize I'll have to start faster for the OUA's.
"The race was won by Laurentian graduate,Leila Angrand, in a time of 17:48. Angrand is now studying for her Masters of Occupational Therapy at the University of Western Ontario.
"We held Meghan Juuti and Kirsti Dolson out of the race," said head coach, Dick Moss, of his top-two runners. "We want to make sure they're healthy for the OUA's in two weeks. But this gave some of the other girls, like Kelly and Maggie, a chance to shine."
