Ellerton in Arizona

Congratulations to Andrew Ellerton, who ran his first race in more than a year and a half, running a 48.2 in the 3rd leg in a 4 x 400m relay at the Arizona State Meet last weekend.

Andrew is now training with Wynn Gmitroski (and Gary Reed) and living in Phoenix and Victoria. He has been off with a navicular bone (foot) fracture but it looks like the foot is ready and that Andrew's new training situation is starting to kick in!

Devon in the 50k!!!

Devon Kershaw - 5TH !!!!!!! IN THE 50KM MASS START XC SKI.

After two hours of skiing, Devon finished only 1.6 seconds from gold and only .6 seconds from the podium...and as befitting one of the best athletes in the world... disappointed he didn't come in first!

Best finish ever for a Canadian!!!

WOW!

AMAZING, DEVON!!

Two Gold Medalists!

I've been away at the OUA Championships so missed sending an Olympic update. You probably all know by now, but congratulations to alumni, Rebecca Johnston, who is now an OLYMPIC CHAMPION! Rebecca's hockey team beat the Americans 2-0 to win the Olympic Gold on Friday night.

Continuing the Gold Medal theme, Alannah MacLean struck gold at the OFSAA cross-country skiing championships last weekend! Alannah topped 146 other racers to win the senior girls' race at the Midland Ski Club.

Emily Marcolini also had an excellent result, placing 12th in the Junior Girls race.

Way to go, everyone!!

OUA Championships Results

OUA Indoor Track and Field Championships
York University, 2/26-2/27, 2010.

Two Laurentian athletes competed at the OUA indoor track and field championships at York University this weekend.
Emma Tallman achieved two top-ten finishes and two personals bests. Tallman placed 8th in the 1000m with a time of 2:54.63,  a 2.6 second personal best. She also placed 9th in the 600m with a 135.93, a personal best by 1.4 seconds.

Maggie Robins placed 15th in the 1000m with a time of 3:12.39.

"Emma definitely peaked at the right time, and she ran an excellent tactical race," said head coach, Dick Moss. " She was very aggressive and made a big jump in her personal-best times. At this point, she ranks 13th in the CIS in the 1000m. The best thing is, she's still very young and should be a real factor at the national level over the next three years."

Olympic Update

Devon's 4 x 10km relay team placed 7th. Devon said he still felt pooped from the team pursuit earlier in the week. No wonder!! Their placing at 7th was still a best placing for a Canadian squad in the event!

Rebecca Johnston and her women's hockey team play in the gold medal game tonight. Tune in at 6:30 PM!!

Way to go Rebecca and Devon!

Rebecca's Game & Devon Kershaw's Comments & Photos

Kershaw - 4th at the Olympics!!

Congratulations to Devon Kershaw who had an AMAZING race in the team sprint at the Olympics today (2 skiers, doing 3 laps each parlauff-relay-style).

Devon was a beast, giving his partner the lead in both semi-finals and finals. It was the best-ever finish for Canada in an event that has always been dominated by European countries.

HoooHooo!!

Fred Foot Invitational Results'10
January 23, 2010,  Toronto, ON

Track North and the Laurentian University Lady Vees Indoor Track team travelled to the University of Toronto this weekend to compete at the Fred Foot Invitational.

Competing against teams from University of Toronto, Queen's, McMaster, RMC, Laurier and various track clubs, the Lady Vees qualified for three OUA events and collected five medals including 2 silvers and 3 bronze.

Leading the Lady Vees was Emma Tallman (Mindemoya, ON) who was the 1st university runner in the 1000m (2nd overall) and 3rd in the 600m.  Tallman's times of 2:57.23 and 1:37.36 were personal bests, rank her in the top 10 in the OUA and qualify her for the OUA championships in both events.

Also impressive was Maggie Robins' (Port Perry, ON) 3rd place finish in the 1000m with a time of 3:01.36.  The time qualifies Robins to run at the OUA Championships at the end of February.  Stephanie Flieler (Trenton) ran to a 2nd place finish in the 3000m time with a time of 11:02.71.

Tallman commented, "I felt really strong and it's good to know I can run a solid time like I did in my 1000m despite running most of the race alone.  I'm starting to figure this distance out and I look forward to being pushed to faster times as we approach the OUA championships."

"Emma continues to impress," commented Darren Jermyn, assistant coach of the Lady Vees.  "She ran aggressively in the 1000m and it led to a seven-second personal best and a top 10 OUA ranking. Then she ran another personal best in the 600m with very little recovery time."

Next up for the Lady Vees is the York University Open Classic on Saturday, February 5th.

Track North Junior Team 9th at Nationals, Proudfoot close to making Team Canada

Track North Junior Team 9th at Nationals,
Proudfoot close to making Team Canada
Guelph, ON

Seven Track North Athletic Club athletes competed this past weekend at the Athletics Canada National Cross-Country Running Championships in Guelph, Ontario.

This year marked the first time in club history that Track North fielded a full Junior Men's team at the national championships.  The team competed on a rolling 8km course on the University of Guelph campus.  Competing against over 200 of the top athletes aged 19 and under from across the country, the team of Ross Proudfoot, 17 (Lively, ON), Chantry Cargill, 19 (Sudbury, ON), Jeremy Cooper, 16 (Manitowaning, ON), Joe Burke, 17 (Espanola) and Sebastian Diebel, 16 (Nairn, ON) placed 9th overall with a combined team score of 257 points.  The Windsor Legion Track and Field Club won the team gold medal with a low score of 49 points.

Leading the Track North squad was Proudfoot, who continued his excellent season with a 14th place showing and an impressive time of 25:00 on the 8km course.  Proudfoot, a grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, was just 9 seconds back of the final qualifying spot for the Canadian Junior Team that will compete next March at the World Championships in Poland.

Following Proudfoot was Cargill, in 28th place in a time of 25:48.  This result also capped an excellent season for Cargill, a first year engineering student at the University of Ottawa, who also placed 7th amongst rookies at the Ontario University Cross-Country Championships this past October.

Rounding out the Junior Men's team were Cooper in 57th (26:31), Burke in 158th (28:19) and Diebel in 196th (30:15).

Other Track North athletes competing included Sudbury Ironman triathlete Mike Couglin, who ran to a very impressive 29th place in the Masters (age 30+) Championship 8km race with a time of 28:45.  Steven Eles placed 66th in the Senior Men's 10km event with a time of 33:15.

Proudfoot commented following the race: That is the hardest I've run all season and I'm very happy with my result.  I was a lot closer to a few runners that beat me at OFSAA and I'm gaining confidence by keeping the gap between me and lead group as small as possible.  I will definitely be looking to make the world championship team next year.

Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented: I am very proud of the entire team.  We knew if everyone had a solid race that we could be amongst the top 10 teams in the country and the boys definitely got the job done today.  We beat teams from much larger clubs from Toronto, London, Niagara Falls and Kitchener.  Ross and Chantry definitely led our team with their experience running at national championship competitions.  We have a very young squad that includes two 16-year olds and two 17-year olds so the future is definitely bright for Track North.

Tallman, Villanova - NCAA Cross Country Champions

Track North's Tallman and Villanova Wildcats Crowned NCAA Champions

Terre Haute, Indiana, Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Sudbury Track North Athletics Club's Kaitlyn Tallman, a senior at Villanova University, captured the team gold medal today at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross-Country Running Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Tallman, from Mindemoya, along with her teammates scored 86 points (low score wins), beating 2nd place Florida State by a 47 point margin. The University of Washington, who were ranked 1st all year, finished 3rd, 100 points behind Villanova.

Tallman commented shortly after her race, "It's an unbelievable feeling.  It's still sinking in.  We are all so excited and we can't stop crying because we worked so hard all year to put ourselves in a position to win and we did it.  Personally, I didn't have my best race but at the end of the day its a team sport and I'm so proud of the girls on this team."

Tallman finished 84th in a field of 255 of the highest caliber runners in the NCAA.

Tallman's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, commented: "What an amazing day for Kaitlyn and the entire Track North community.  We cannot be any happier for her and her teammates at this moment.  She has gone through so much over the past several years, from being an OFSAA gold medallist to really struggling to stay injury free and running to her full potential. The coaching staff at Villanova have done an outstanding job developing Kaitlyn into a national level runner and we are excited to see what she does next.  Seeing her holding the championship trophy on national television after the race will be with me for years to come."

Track North's Kaitlyn Tallman (Mindemoya, ON), a senior at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA, put in another huge performance today at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross-Country Running Championships held today at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Running over a muddy, rain soaked course, Tallman covered the 6 kilometer race in an incredible time of 20:57, placing 9th in a field of 190 runners.  Tallman's Villanova team was definitely the class of the field, placing first by over 50 points in the NCAA's deepest region.  Villanova easily beat nationally ranked Princeton and West Virginia.,

For the second year in a row, Tallman earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honours and along with her teammates will compete in the NCAA Division I National Championships on November 23rd in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Ramsey Tour - Info & Officials Needed

Hey Everybody,

The 33rd annual Ramsey Tour 5k/Half Marathon will be held next weekend - Sunday September 13th at 10:00 (note the time change..10:00 AM, not 10:30 AM).

Proceeds from the this race will assist the Laurentian Women's XC/Track team by providing them with bursaries and scholarships. As you know, many of these athletes also compete for Track North.

If you're not racing, we can use your help as officials - in particular, finish line officials and race marshalls. The time commitment would be from about 9:00 AM to about 12:30. As always, you'll receive a free lunch afterwards.

If you can help, please let me know as soon as you can!

Rebecca and Snax

TRACK NORTH NEWS

Rebecca Johnston has been having a great tournament at the Canada Cup, bagging a hat trick against Finland (who beat the USA) for five goals in her first two games. You can see a Canada Press and Sudbury Star article about her at:
http://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/66213/ss_id/58100/la_id/1.htm
She plays again tomorrow and then in the final against the USA on Sunday.

Eric Roque (Snax) is just finishing his football training camp at the U. of Waterloo. Here's what their season's preview has to say about him:

"Eric Roque, KR (5-4 155, Sudbury, Ont. - Collège Notre-Dame)
Eric is a dynamic player with blazing speed. He is a former Canadian National Junior sprint finalist. He will be exciting to watch and reminds the coaching staff of our very own pinball."
("Pinball" refers to Pinball Clemens one of the all-time great CFL players.
http://www.athletics.uwaterloo.ca/varsity/sports/2009_2010/football/index.htm

For those of you who know who Pinball Clemens is, you might appreciate the fact that the Waterloo Offensive Coordinator is Joe Paopao - one of the all-time great CFL quarterbacks and former CFL coach.

Snax also plans to run indoor track at Waterloo.

Next up for Caroline is the Canadian Junior Championships, being held from July 17th to 19th in Charlottetown, PEI. Caroline will compete in both the triple jump and long jump.

Jeremy in Afghanistan

A shout-out to TNOR and Laurentian alumni sprinter, Jeremy Lajeunesse, who's currently posted with the armed forces out of the Kandahar air field in Afganistan.

Jeremy's job is planning how to support all the forward elements in the province, including planning for fuel, ammo, rations, convoy schedules, air replenishment etc. A LOT of responsibility.

Jeremy is still running to stay fit - usually at 5:00 AM.

Get back home safe, Jeremy!!
