Proudfoot races Olympian, sets new 1500m PB

London, ON
Runner's Choice London Distance Series

Track North's Ross Proudfoot continued his impressive spring track season by running to a new personal best over 1500 metres at the high performance Runner's Choice London Distance Series track meet held in London, ON last night.

Racing in a field that included 2008 Canadian Olympic Track and Field team member Taylor Milne (Callendar, ON), Proudfoot finished in 5th place with a time of 3 minutes 52.36 seconds.  This time is 5 seconds faster than his previous best over 1500m set earlier this winter at an indoor meet in Ottawa.  Milne won the race in a time of 3 minutes 40.71 seconds.

"I felt strong the whole race but got a bit boxed in for a short section on the third lap as there was a pack of us all running around the same speed.  I couldn't make my final move as early as I would have liked but I still finished strong and caught a few runners over the final lap.  Overall, I'm very happy with my result and time" commented Proudfoot following his race.

"We knew the pace was going to be fast as the meet organizers brought in pacemakers to ensure the athletes covered the first 800m on a fast pace. Ross did a solid job tucking behind the pacemakers and hit all the splits we planned prior to the race. Ross has been training very hard this spring and the results of this work are now starting to show.  He has run to three new personal bests over three different distances, 800m, 1500m and 3000m in his last three competitions" commented Track North coach, Darren Jermyn.

Proudfoot Wins Major Track Title

Proudfoot Wins Major Track Title
Takes Gold at Nike Invitational 3000m

Lively's Ross Proudfoot, competing for Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, won the Nike Invitational 3000m High School Boys race at the Rowland Games Track and Field Meet this past weekend in Toronto, ON.  In winning gold, Proudfoot ran to a new personal best time of 8 minutes, 27.23 seconds.

Each year, the Nike Invitational race features the best high school distance runners from across the province.  Proudfoot's winning time was not only one of the fastest winning times in the meet's long history but quite possibly the fastest 3000m ever run by a Sudbury high school student.

"I felt great the whole race", commented Proudfoot. "I got out quickly with the lead pack and then settled into third place for most of the race.  I noticed the leaders were fading a bit and so with 600 metres to go, I made a move to the front and pushed hard to the finish."  Proudfoot won the race by over 4 seconds, with Xavier King of Pickering High School claiming the silver in 8 minutes, 31.90 seconds.

"We'll have to do some digging through the local track and field archives to see if any Sudbury high schooler has run a time faster than this." commented Proudfoot's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn.  "The great thing is, its still only April and we have only completed a few outdoor track workouts to date.  This definitely sets up Ross for a solid remaining high school and summer track season."

Other impressive results from the Rowland Games meet include Caroline Ehrhardt (Espanola High School) winning gold in the Senior Girl's Long Jump with a leap of 5.56 metres; Joe Burke (Espanola High School) placing 4th in the Senior's Boys 1500m race in a time of 4:10.06 and Jeremy Cooper (Manitoulin High School) placing 13th in the Nike 3000m with a time of 8:50.02.

Also this weekend:  Track North athlete, Andrew Ellerton ran the lead off 1200 metre leg for Team Canada in the "USA vs. The World" Distance Medley relay race at the 116th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA.  Ellerton ran a time of 2 minutes 53.55 seconds and handed off the baton in 3rd place in a race against Morocca, Australia, Kenya and two teams from the United States.  Canada finished the race with a 6th place finish.

Ellerton's 800 at Arizona State

Arizona State Sun Angel Track Classic
Phoenix, April 10, 2010

Nice run for Andrew Ellerton at the Arizona State Sun Angel Track Classic. Racing his first 800m in a year and a half because of injuries, Andrew ran a nice controlled race, trailing the pack for the first lap with a pedestrian 55 second split, moving into fifth with 100m to go and flying by the pack on the homestretch. He placed first in the college/open section with a time of 1:50.06.

It was a good way to get his first 800m under his belt.

You can see Andrew's race at the following link. He's wearing the orange top and grey shorts.

Devon in the 50k!!!

Devon Kershaw - 5TH !!!!!!! IN THE 50KM MASS START XC SKI.

After two hours of skiing, Devon finished only 1.6 seconds from gold and only .6 seconds from the podium...and as befitting one of the best athletes in the world... disappointed he didn't come in first!

Best finish ever for a Canadian!!!

WOW!

AMAZING, DEVON!!

Two Gold Medalists!

I've been away at the OUA Championships so missed sending an Olympic update. You probably all know by now, but congratulations to alumni, Rebecca Johnston, who is now an OLYMPIC CHAMPION! Rebecca's hockey team beat the Americans 2-0 to win the Olympic Gold on Friday night.

Continuing the Gold Medal theme, Alannah MacLean struck gold at the OFSAA cross-country skiing championships last weekend! Alannah topped 146 other racers to win the senior girls' race at the Midland Ski Club.

Emily Marcolini also had an excellent result, placing 12th in the Junior Girls race.

Way to go, everyone!!

OUA Championships Results

OUA Indoor Track and Field Championships
York University, 2/26-2/27, 2010.

Two Laurentian athletes competed at the OUA indoor track and field championships at York University this weekend.
Emma Tallman achieved two top-ten finishes and two personals bests. Tallman placed 8th in the 1000m with a time of 2:54.63,  a 2.6 second personal best. She also placed 9th in the 600m with a 135.93, a personal best by 1.4 seconds.

Maggie Robins placed 15th in the 1000m with a time of 3:12.39.

"Emma definitely peaked at the right time, and she ran an excellent tactical race," said head coach, Dick Moss. " She was very aggressive and made a big jump in her personal-best times. At this point, she ranks 13th in the CIS in the 1000m. The best thing is, she's still very young and should be a real factor at the national level over the next three years."

Olympic Update

Devon's 4 x 10km relay team placed 7th. Devon said he still felt pooped from the team pursuit earlier in the week. No wonder!! Their placing at 7th was still a best placing for a Canadian squad in the event!

Rebecca Johnston and her women's hockey team play in the gold medal game tonight. Tune in at 6:30 PM!!

Way to go Rebecca and Devon!

Rebecca's Game & Devon Kershaw's Comments & Photos

Here are Devon's comments after the race and some amazing photos: http://www.devonkershaw.com/default.asp?mode=newsstory&id=119

Congrats to Rebecca Johnston, whose Olympic hockey squad beat the Finns in the semi-finals to advance to the finals on Thursday. Rebecca got an assist in the game.

Kershaw - 4th at the Olympics!!

Congratulations to Devon Kershaw who had an AMAZING race in the team sprint at the Olympics today (2 skiers, doing 3 laps each parlauff-relay-style).

Devon was a beast, giving his partner the lead in both semi-finals and finals. It was the best-ever finish for Canada in an event that has always been dominated by European countries.

HoooHooo!!

Fred Foot Invitational Results'10
January 23, 2010,  Toronto, ON

Track North and the Laurentian University Lady Vees Indoor Track team travelled to the University of Toronto this weekend to compete at the Fred Foot Invitational.

Competing against teams from University of Toronto, Queen's, McMaster, RMC, Laurier and various track clubs, the Lady Vees qualified for three OUA events and collected five medals including 2 silvers and 3 bronze.

Leading the Lady Vees was Emma Tallman (Mindemoya, ON) who was the 1st university runner in the 1000m (2nd overall) and 3rd in the 600m.  Tallman's times of 2:57.23 and 1:37.36 were personal bests, rank her in the top 10 in the OUA and qualify her for the OUA championships in both events.

Also impressive was Maggie Robins' (Port Perry, ON) 3rd place finish in the 1000m with a time of 3:01.36.  The time qualifies Robins to run at the OUA Championships at the end of February.  Stephanie Flieler (Trenton) ran to a 2nd place finish in the 3000m time with a time of 11:02.71.

Tallman commented, "I felt really strong and it's good to know I can run a solid time like I did in my 1000m despite running most of the race alone.  I'm starting to figure this distance out and I look forward to being pushed to faster times as we approach the OUA championships."

"Emma continues to impress," commented Darren Jermyn, assistant coach of the Lady Vees.  "She ran aggressively in the 1000m and it led to a seven-second personal best and a top 10 OUA ranking. Then she ran another personal best in the 600m with very little recovery time."

Next up for the Lady Vees is the York University Open Classic on Saturday, February 5th.

Track North Junior Team 9th at Nationals, Proudfoot close to making Team Canada

Track North Junior Team 9th at Nationals,
Proudfoot close to making Team Canada
Guelph, ON

Seven Track North Athletic Club athletes competed this past weekend at the Athletics Canada National Cross-Country Running Championships in Guelph, Ontario.

This year marked the first time in club history that Track North fielded a full Junior Men's team at the national championships.  The team competed on a rolling 8km course on the University of Guelph campus.  Competing against over 200 of the top athletes aged 19 and under from across the country, the team of Ross Proudfoot, 17 (Lively, ON), Chantry Cargill, 19 (Sudbury, ON), Jeremy Cooper, 16 (Manitowaning, ON), Joe Burke, 17 (Espanola) and Sebastian Diebel, 16 (Nairn, ON) placed 9th overall with a combined team score of 257 points.  The Windsor Legion Track and Field Club won the team gold medal with a low score of 49 points.

Leading the Track North squad was Proudfoot, who continued his excellent season with a 14th place showing and an impressive time of 25:00 on the 8km course.  Proudfoot, a grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, was just 9 seconds back of the final qualifying spot for the Canadian Junior Team that will compete next March at the World Championships in Poland.

Following Proudfoot was Cargill, in 28th place in a time of 25:48.  This result also capped an excellent season for Cargill, a first year engineering student at the University of Ottawa, who also placed 7th amongst rookies at the Ontario University Cross-Country Championships this past October.

Rounding out the Junior Men's team were Cooper in 57th (26:31), Burke in 158th (28:19) and Diebel in 196th (30:15).

Other Track North athletes competing included Sudbury Ironman triathlete Mike Couglin, who ran to a very impressive 29th place in the Masters (age 30+) Championship 8km race with a time of 28:45.  Steven Eles placed 66th in the Senior Men's 10km event with a time of 33:15.

Proudfoot commented following the race: That is the hardest I've run all season and I'm very happy with my result.  I was a lot closer to a few runners that beat me at OFSAA and I'm gaining confidence by keeping the gap between me and lead group as small as possible.  I will definitely be looking to make the world championship team next year.

Track North coach Darren Jermyn commented: I am very proud of the entire team.  We knew if everyone had a solid race that we could be amongst the top 10 teams in the country and the boys definitely got the job done today.  We beat teams from much larger clubs from Toronto, London, Niagara Falls and Kitchener.  Ross and Chantry definitely led our team with their experience running at national championship competitions.  We have a very young squad that includes two 16-year olds and two 17-year olds so the future is definitely bright for Track North.

Tallman, Villanova - NCAA Cross Country Champions

Track North's Tallman and Villanova Wildcats Crowned NCAA Champions

Terre Haute, Indiana, Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Sudbury Track North Athletics Club's Kaitlyn Tallman, a senior at Villanova University, captured the team gold medal today at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross-Country Running Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Tallman, from Mindemoya, along with her teammates scored 86 points (low score wins), beating 2nd place Florida State by a 47 point margin. The University of Washington, who were ranked 1st all year, finished 3rd, 100 points behind Villanova.

Tallman commented shortly after her race, "It's an unbelievable feeling.  It's still sinking in.  We are all so excited and we can't stop crying because we worked so hard all year to put ourselves in a position to win and we did it.  Personally, I didn't have my best race but at the end of the day its a team sport and I'm so proud of the girls on this team."

Tallman finished 84th in a field of 255 of the highest caliber runners in the NCAA.

Tallman's Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, commented: "What an amazing day for Kaitlyn and the entire Track North community.  We cannot be any happier for her and her teammates at this moment.  She has gone through so much over the past several years, from being an OFSAA gold medallist to really struggling to stay injury free and running to her full potential. The coaching staff at Villanova have done an outstanding job developing Kaitlyn into a national level runner and we are excited to see what she does next.  Seeing her holding the championship trophy on national television after the race will be with me for years to come."

"Eric Roque, KR (5-4 155, Sudbury, Ont. - Collège Notre-Dame)
Eric is a dynamic player with blazing speed. He is a former Canadian National Junior sprint finalist. He will be exciting to watch and reminds the coaching staff of our very own pinball."

Caroline at World Youth - Qualification Round

North's Caroline Ehrhardt (Espanola, ON) competed today at the 6th IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Suditrol, Italy.

Unfortunatey, Caroline's best jump of 12.48m was not good enough to qualify for the final on Friday (top 12 in qualification move onto the final). Caroline will place 16th overall out of field of 35 of the best triple jumpers aged 17 and under in the world.

Next up for Caroline is the Canadian Junior Championships, being held from July 17th to 19th in Charlottetown, PEI. Caroline will compete in both the triple jump and long jump.

Track North's Caroline Ehrhardt will compete for Canada this Wednesday (July 8th) at the 6th IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Sudtirol, Italy.

Caroline will be competing in her speciality, the triple jump, starting with the qualification round commencing at 5:40pm (Sudtirol time) on Wednesday.  The top 12 jumpers from the qualifying round will move onto the final, being contested on Friday, July 10th at 4:40pm.
