Andrew Makes the NCAA Finals
Congratulations to Andrew Ellerton for qualifying fo the NCAA final for the second time in two years!
Ellerton Punches Ticket to Finals on Day Two of NCAAsSACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Junior Andrew
Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) qualified for the 800-meter run final to lead the University of Michigan men's track and field team on the second day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday (June 9) at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Ellerton clocked in at a season-best 1:47.30 for fourth place in the loaded first heat of the semifinals -- with six All-Americans among the eight-man field -- to advance to the 800-meter final for the second straight year. He earned All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish.
Starting the race in the middle of the track, the Wolverine dropped to the rear of the pack at the break and remained in the seventh position as Texas Tech's Johnathon Johnson, the defending NCAA outdoor champion in the event, set the pace at a quick 50.87 opening lap. Cutting to the outside down the backstretch, Ellerton began to move with 200 meters to go, passing several competitors around the turn before kicking into fourth place in the final straightaway. Ellerton shaved 0.58 seconds from his previous season-best mark, which he set during yesterday's preliminary heat.
Q U O T E S
Junior Andrew EllertonOn his 800-meter semifinal ... "I was way out the back the first 200 meters; they got out really hard, and I haven't been in a race that fast yet this year. So, that was good practice for Saturday, and I learned something too. On Saturday, I'll just have to put myself in it a little better, and see what I have left in the last 100. Hopefully, I'll be up there with those guys. I didn't really overextend myself today; I ran hard the last 100, but I didn't go all out. I knew our heat was really fast, and I didn't think the other heat would go that fast. I took the chance today and conserved a little bit of energy.
"On the first heat field ... "I wasn't too nervous going in, not anymore than any other race. I just knew it would be a pretty fast race. Most of those guys in the heat made finals; it was almost a preview of Saturday' minus a couple guys. I knew that going in, and I just wanted to be competitive."

Ellerton in NCAA Heats
NCAA Championships - Sacramento California
Nice run in the NCAA heats for Andrew Ellerton. See media release below:
Junior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) posted a qualifying performance in the 800m as the University of Michigan men's track and field team opened competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.
Ellerton registered a season-best 1:47.88 to win the fourth heat in the 800-meter run and pick up an automatic qualifier to the semfinal round. Starting the race in the inside lane, Ellerton settled into the back of the eight-man field at the break and remained there through the first lap as the pack came through the opening 400 meters at 52.23 -- the fastest opening split among the four preliminary heats. The Wolverine cut to the outside down the backstretch and gradually pushed toward the front before coming out the bend in the third position. Ellerton used his kick to take a slim lead in the final straightaway as the top three finished just 0.25 seconds apart. Ellerton's time was the fastest of the preliminary round and improved his season best by 0.47 seconds.
Quotes: Andrew Ellerton
On his 800-meter preliminary ... "My race went better than what I was expecting. It felt really good. I was thinking I would have to work a little harder than I actually did. I ended up with the fastest seed time; I was a little surprised at how slow the other heats went. I was just shooting for a top three. I saw that Johnathan Johnson was in my heat, and he's probably the favorite coming in here. I was just expecting him to take it, and I'd run a comfortable top three. When it came down to the homestretch, there was a guy from Baylor starting to come on, and I didn't want to take any chances, so, I just pushed that extra little bit just to make sure. I didn't have to work too hard, and it felt pretty comfortable. It was also the fastest time I've run all year; it gives me a lot more confidence going into tomorrow and Saturday."

TNOR Baby + Baby News
Great news on the development of the Track North 4 x 800m relay teams of 2025! Hot on the heels of the Krista Bray new-baby announcement, comes not one, but two more.
Kerry MacKelvie and husband Shane (O'Brien) are expecting on October 7th.
Running hard on her shoulder with a baby-due-date of October 10th are Sheila Aitken and Andrew (Morrow). Sheila, however has told me that she plans to kick early and outlean Kerry by delivering on the 6th.

World XC's
Lisa Labrecque of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, placed 78th at the World XC Running Championships in St. Etienne France last weekend."
It was a disappointing race," said Labrecque. "I got caught behind some slower runners at the start, was bumped and spiked and the next thing I knew, I was surrounded by other runners near the back of the pack. I'm afraid I expended too much energy on the first lap trying to get out of that mess and move up through the field."
The Canadian team placed 9th out of 16 teams, led by Olympic 1500m finalist, Carmen Douma, who placed 25th. Twenty-eight countries were represented in the race.
The 4k race, conducted in 28 degree heat in front of 28,000 fans, followed a winding course that forced runners to cross dirt mounds, logs and, strangely, a patch of manure.

Lisa Selected for Worlds
Labrecque Selected to World Cross-Country Running Team
Lisa Labrecque, of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, has been selected to represent Canada at the World Cross-Country Running Championships in Saint Galmier France in March.
Labrecque will compete on the short-course four kilometre team that, in a major upset last year, placed third in the world. Last year, Labrecque competed for the 8k team that placed seventh."
Canada's 4km squad beat everybody but Ethiopia and Kenya in 2004, so the European teams will really be gunning for us this year." said Labrecque. "Even though we're missing two of our top runners from that squad, we're still aiming for a quality finish."
Labrecque earned selection by placing fifth at the Canadian Cross-Country Running Championships in December and running personal best times in the New York mile and Boston 3000m races in January."
Lisa is primarily an 800/1500m runner," said Track North coach, Dick Moss. "So for her to be running at an international level over four kilometres is truly exceptional."
Members of the 4k team include:
Carmen Douma-Hussar, Cambridge, ON
Hilary Edmondson, Sarnia, ON
Courtney Inman, Mt. Lehman, BC
Lisa Labrecque, Sudbury, ON
Megan Metcalfe, Cornwall
Rebecca Stallwood, Burlington, ON

After an injury-riddled Fall and early Winter, it looks like Andrew Ellerton is starting to get fit. Nice PB's by Mad-Dawg Woods and Tammy Dufresne who did their Siamese Twins impression across the finish line. Lisa is Top-Five in the World
Lisa Labrecque's 4:35.69 mile in New York last weekend was indeed a fast race. It places her fifth in the world at this point in the season!
Wedding Bells
Here's some shocking news. All TNOR old-timers, please be sure you're seated. After only 14 years of dating, Tony Scott has asked Dawn to marry him...and she accepted! He did the deed on New Year's eve. Projected wedding date is a little hazy - possibly two summers from now (or sometime within the next 14 years).

TNOR Results: New York, Saginaw Valley, Western Open
New Balance Indoor Games - New York City
Lisa Labrecque uncorked a huge one in the invitational mile at the New Balance Games this weekend. Competing at New York City's Armory track, only two blocks from the Trump Tower, she ran an 11-second personal best of 4:35.69 for a fifth place finish. The time is equivalent to a 4:14/1500m and places her 8th on the all-time Canadian list in the indoor mile. For some more perspective, a 4:35 would win or medal at the NCAA indoors championships in most years.
It was a nice trip for Lisa - the meet promoters picked up her flight and accomodations expenses in the Big Apple.

Saginaw Valley State Invitational
Megan Juuti,
800m, 7th, 2:28.21
