Leila, Kaitlyn and Laurentian Results

There were some nice races by Track North runners this weekend.
Leila Angrand placed 3rd at the Loyola Invitational in Chicago, running the 5k course in 17:45.
Kaitlyn Tallman ran a fast 22:15 over 6k at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. She was the fourth fastest runner on her Villanova squad.

As for the Laurentian squad, here are the results:

Waterloo/Don Mills Open, Columbia Ice Fields, Waterloo Campus, 9/29/07

The Laurentian women's cross-country running team placed third out of six teams at the
Waterloo open this weekend.

The Voyageurs were led by Meghan Juuti who placed 5th out of the university entrants by running 15:12 over the 4003m course.

She was closely followed by Kirsti Dolson, 6th in 15:19, Kelly Laing, 12th in 15:37, Stephanie Flieler, 15th in 15:49 and Hilary Kilbreath, 19th in 16:01. Maggie Robins and Amanda Seed rounded up the scoring in 16:02 to and 17:18 respectively."We were just five points behind Waterloo," said head coach Dick Moss. "It looks like we'll be neck-and-neck with them at the OUA's."Laurentian's next race is at the Yellowjacket Invitational, in Rochester, New York, on October 13th.

Leila and Devon

Nice run for Leila at the McGill Open XC Race. Leila, who is taking her Masters of Occupational Therapy degree at Western, won the race by 55 seconds with a time of 14:48 over the hilly 4k course.

Devon Kershaw, won the Longboat 10k. Devon won in 31:45 running on his own completely from start to finish (hit 5k in 15:28). See his post-race photo attached...yup - he's still wearing his Track North singlet.

Well, I know one nordic skier who can run. Devon Kershaw ran a 5k time trial today - on the Laurentian track, in flats, alone except for two timers, and hammered a personal best 15:03! His splits were 1k: 2:45, 3k: 8:50.

Devon is in Sudbury for a day or two and may drop by the track tonight with his girlfriend, Chandra Crawford.

For those of you who don't know him, Devon is a TNOR alumni who is a member of the Canadian Olympic Nordic ski team. He has already been a world cup medalist in the sprints. Chandra won a nordic gold medal in the last Olympics.

Another Medal for Grace

Apparently Grace Thomson won yet another medal at the National Legions, as one of the runners on Ontario's medley relay team that won bronze. Thanks to Peter Hocking, who was officiating there and sent me the news.

Results - National Legion Track and Field Championship
Gagetown, Oromocoto, New Brunswick

Grace Thomson, representing Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club and the District H Legion, won a silver medal in the Under-15 80 metre hurdles at the National Legion Track and Field Championships in Oromocto, New Brunswick this weekend.

Thomson, a grade 10 student at Lockerby Secondary, ran a personal best time of 11.93 seconds in a hotly contested race that saw three athletes cross the finish line simultaneously. She was only 1/100th of a second behind the winner, Sophie Arsenault of Quebec, and 4/100's ahead of third place finisher, Chole Hetherton of Saskatchewan.

Thomson also ran on Ontario's 4 x 400m relay team that placed third, and the 4 x 100m team that placed fifth.

Track North Athletes Medal at Provincial and Eastern Canadian Championships

It was a very successful weekend for Track North athletes competing at both the Ontario Track and Field Championships in Toronto and the Eastern Canadian Espoir Team Championships in St. John's Newfoundland.

Caroline Ehrhardt, competing in the 15 and under category, jumped her way to a gold and silver medal at the Ontario championships held at York University. Ehrhardt struck gold in the triple jump with a very impressive final jump of 11.53m. Later in the same day, Ehrhardt won a silver medal in the long jump with a best performance of 5.19m.

St. John's, Newfoundland hosted this year's Eastern Canadian Espoir Track and Field Championships and two of Track North's elite athletes, Leila Angrand and Eric Ouellette were chosen to compete for Team Ontario. Angrand earned two medals over the weekend competition, winning the women's 3000m in 9:55.32 and finishing second in the 1500m in a time of 4:31.62. Ouellette was a member of the Ontario's gold medal winning 4 X 400m relay team - running a season's best split of 49.5 seconds. Ouellette also finished 4th in both the men's 400m (51.17) and 8000m (2:01.57).

Leila and Eric to Espoir Meet

Two members of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club have been named to Ontario's Track and Field team that will compete at the Eastern Canadian Team Espoir (Under-23) Championships this weekend in Saint John's Newfoundland.

Leila Angrand will compete in the 1500m and 3000m, while Eric Ouellette will race in the 400m, 800m and 4 x 400m events.

The championship involves teams from Ontario, Quebec and the maritime provinces competing for the highest point score. Ontario's squad numbers 30 athletes.

Provincial Legion Championship Results

Provincial Legion Championships - Ottawa
July 20-21, 2007

Athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club returned from the Ontario Legion Track and Field Championships with four medals and one qualifier for the National Legion Championships.

Representing Track North and Legion District H, Grace Thomson won the 80m hurdles in the Under-15 category with a time of 12.33. Thomson qualified for the National Championships, to be held Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, in Oromocto New Brunswick, in early August. A grade-10 student at Lockerby Secondary, she will participate in a week long training camp, culminating in the national championship meet. All expenses will be paid by the Royal Canadian Legion.

Caroline Erhardt, of Espanola, won two medals in the 15 and under category, jumping 5.10 metres in the long jump for a silver medal, and 10.97 for a bronze in the triple jump. She also competed in the 800m, where she placed 8th with a time of 2:29.85.

Ross Proudfoot, also in the 15 and under category, won a bronze medal in the 1500m with a time of 4:14.95. He narrowly missed another medal, placing 4th in the 3000m with a time of 9:30.44.

Other athletes included Tianna Deck, who placed 6th in the long and triple jumps, and 10th in the 100m; Alannah MacLean, 8th in the 100m and 13th in the 200m, Brett Deck, 8th in both the long and triple jumps and Eric Roque, 9th in the 100m and 11th in the 200m

Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships

Windsor, July 13-15, 2007

Andrew Ellerton, representing Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, won a bronze medal in the 800m at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships this weekend, running a time of 1:47.48. Ellerton, fatigued from a busy NCAA schedule, is finishing his season with this meet.

Leila Angrand ran two personal bests, placing 14th in both the 800m and 1500m. Her 2:12.07 was a 3-second best in the 800m, and her 4:30.31 was a one-second best in the 1500.

Eric Ouellette placed 31st in the 800m with a time of 2:04.02.

Firecracker 5K Results

Firecracker 5km-Sudbury 2007

The annual Firecracker 5km had a nice showing of TNOR athletes. Thanks to long-time organizers, TNOR alumni Ron Poirier and Malcolm Steven, and Vince Perdue. After founding the race 20 years ago, Ron is passing the organizational duties on to others. Malcolm who drove from Waterloo every year to assist, and Vince, who has been helping organize for the 13 years the race has been in Lively, are also retiring and will finally get a July 1st weekend off.

Every year, the Firecracker has donated money to Track North and also to their main charity, the Breast Cancer Association.

Many, many Track North athletes have raced in the Firecracker over the years (and taken home shoes and other super prizes) including a number of our OFSAA and National medalists. I've always thought it was one of the best events on the road racing circuit - well organized, great course, super prizes, friendly and fun!

Ellerton in Europe

Andrew Ellerton has been busy racing in Europe over the past week.

He came 9th in Salamanca Spain on July 4th with a 1:47.8 for his first race. Felt sluggish and didn't run well tactically.

Then a very nice 3rd place in Padova Italy with a 1:46.66, off a 52 second 400m split. He beat some good international runner and is starting to round into shape again after dragging a bit during the month after NCAA's.

NCAA's and Athletes of the Year

Congratulations to Andrew Ellerton, who qualified for the semi-finals at the NCAA track championships. Andrew run a controlled 1:48.76 to advance to the next round.

Dave McGill at Provincial Masters

Congratulations to Dave McGill, who ran some nice PB's at the Provincial Masters Championships this weekend.

Competing in the 60-64 age category, Dave ran an 11-second PB in the 800m, finishing with a 2:32. In the 1500, he ran a six-second PB, finishing with a 5:19!

In the process, he beat legendary masters runners Earl Fee in the 800m and Ed Whitlock in the 1500. (Earl had beaten Dave indoors).

Ottawa Half Marathon

Kim Bowerman and Julie Forbes ran the half marathon. Kim ran 1:33.40 and Julie finished in 1:36.38.

Kim, by the way, has just been accepted into the clinical prosthetics program at George Brown college.

Ellerton - Mideast Champion!!

Congratulations to Andrew Ellerton, who placed first in the 800m at the Mideast Regional Championships with a smokin' 1:46.84!!!

It was the fastest time among any of the regional championships, and I believe, the fastest in the NCAA this year. It also sets another stadium record.

We have lots of results from cities, but it will take time to get them all together. In the meantime, Andrew Ellerton is competing at the Mid-East Regional Championships in Columbia Missouri. He qualified for the finals with the fastest time - 1:47.43 - which I think is a stadium record.

Sudbury Rocks Run

Here are the results from the 2nd annual Sudbury Rocks Run. Congratulations to Steve and Vince and the entire organizing committee. With over 1000 participants and a new downtown start/finish area, it was a fun and exciting event.

The plan is to make the race a destination event for road racers, and it seems to be working already. One couple I spoke to had travelled from Manitoba to take part in the stage marathon (different starting times based on age class).

Ellerton at Penn Relays

Andrew Ellerton had a busy weekend at the Penn Relays, running a 1:48.5/800 in the Distance Medley Relay, a 4:07.7 mile in the 4 x mile, then, three hours later, a 1:48.3 in the 4 x 800. Leila at the CI's:
If you haven't heard, Leila Angrand returned from the CIS Indoor Track Championships with a silver medal in the 3000m and a 7th place in the 1500m. Her times were a personal best 9:49.86 and 4:35.83, respectively. She was named Second-Team All-Canadian for her 3000m.

Madeleine at the CI's:
Also competing, was Madeleine Woods. Madeleine busted out a 2:14 split in the 4 x 800m relay to help the team to a silver medal, and was named a Second-Team All-Canadian.
Madeleine also placed 6th in the 4 x 400m relay and 9th in the 600m with a 1:36.21.

Andrew Wins Silver at NCAA's!

I was out of town during the NCAA indoor rack championships, so you may not have heard the news. Andrew Ellerton won a silver medal in the 800m, running a season-best 1:48.55.

Rebecca at the Winter Games

It may be cold in Sudbury today, but Rebecca Johnston is in even colder climes. The Yukon, to be exact, where she's competing in the Canada Winter Games for Team Ontario's women's hockey team.

Ontario's team played Newfoundland on Monday, and won 19 to 0. I don't have much more information at this point, but Rebecca's profile is at:

Ellerton's 800 at Alex Wilson

Andrew finished his weekend by winning the open 800m at the Alex Wilson Invitational, in a time of 1:49.30 - off a very slow first 200m of 28.

Ellerton at Alex Wilson Invite

Andrew Ellerton busted out a 1:47.2/800m split in Michigan's third place finish at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame last night. That's moves Michigan from 22nd to 4th in the NCAA and qualifies them for Nationals. He runs the 800m open tonight.

There are links to the video and a story about the race below. The race is on an oversized track, so each lap does not equal 200m and exchanges are in different places every time. Michigan's jersey's are dark blue with a big "M" on the front. Andrew gets the baton in the 3rd leg in about 7th place and is barely in the movie frame until the later laps of his leg, at which point he has gotten Michigan back into contention.

Big Ten & Dave's Race

Dave McGill raced indoors at the Ontario Masters' Mini-Meet at York U, placing 2nd in the 60+ age category and 11th overall, with a time of 3:32.56 in the 1000m. If you check out the photo, you can see Dave duking it out with masters runner legend, Earl Fee.

Congrats to Andrew Ellerton who won gold medals at the Big Ten Championships in both the 800m and the distance medley relay. Andrew went through the 600m in 1:19, to finish in 1:50.91 He also ran the 4 x 400, with a 48.3 split.

Ontario University Championships

Lindsy McNicoll ran a superb personal best in the 3000m, with a time of 10:23.62 and a seventh place finish.

"Lindsy's time is a full minute's improvement over the last year's best," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. "She and Marnie have made huge gains this year."
Angrand's 1500m race came down to a kick for third place over the final lap against Guelph's Rachel Cliff and Windsor's Hannah Eberhardt. Her time of 4:33.93 was a five-second personal best.

Angrand's gold medal race in the 3000m was a tactical chess match. Guelph teammates Rachel Cliff and Laura Moulton, had season bests 20 and 30 seconds better than Angrand's, and it was expected that they would work together and push the pace from the lead positions. Instead, they sat on Angrand's shoulder as Angrand assumed the lead through several slow first laps. Angrand's Laurentian teammate, Lindsy McNicoll, moved up to run side-by-side with Angrand for several laps, helping to share the lead and pick up the pace. After that, Angrand fought off several surges from the Guelph runners, eventually gapping them by three metres with a lap to go, and deciding the race with an explosive kick over the final 200m. McNicoll followed with an excellent seventh place finish and a personal best.

"The race tactics weren't what I expected," said Angrand after the race. "It started so slowly that I decided to take the lead and just make sure nobody passed me. And it really helped when Lindsy moved up to share the lead in the early laps."

"Leila has improved by leaps and bounds in her first indoor season," said head coach, Dick Moss. "Her tactical sense is improving each time she races, and the 3000 proof of that. And I don't think this weekend took too much out of her. She has plenty left in the tank for the CI's."

Angrand races the CIS championships in Montreal on March 9th and 10th.

- Madeleine Woods, competing for Windsor, placed 4th in the 600m with a time of 1:35.44

- Julie Forbes concluded her collegiate running career with a huge PB of 5:10.05 19th place finish in the 1500m.

- Laurentian's Marnie Smith ran a time of 5:01.0, placing 17th in the 1500m. According to assistant coach, Darren Jermyn, "I don't think she has recovered from her huge personal best performance from last week. She looked a little flat. But she's had an incredible season."

- Angrand was named 1st-team All-Star for her gold-medal performance in the 3000m.

- Angrand qualifies for the CIS Championships in both the 1500m and the 3000m.

- The meet provides a raucous atmosphere, with spectators standing both on the infield and in lane three for much of the 200m circuit. It's a wall of noise as the athletes run through this narrow gauntlet.

- Meghan Juuti was slated to run the 1000m, but scratched because of a muscle strain.

Results - York Classic 2007 - York University, Sat February 3rd.

The Laurentian University women's indoor track team competed at the York Indoor Classic this wekkend, and returned with three medals.

Leila Angrand was a double gold medalist for the second time in two weeks, winning both the 1500m and 3000m. Her times of 5:43.43 and 10:15.39 were personal bests.

"I'm having a lot of fun with indoor track," said Angrand, who is competing indoors for the first time." It's a great atmosphere, and I learn something new every time I race."

Lindsy McNicoll won a silver medal in the 3000m, with a personal best time of 10:42.39.

Leila's 3000m was extremely impressive said head coach, Dick Moss. She front-ran the entire race and looked incrediblly relaxed in running a time that ranks her top-ten in the CIS. And she laid down a tremendous kick over the last two laps to win the 1500m. Her time in that event ranks her in the CIS top-six."

Marnie Smith also turned in an impressive race in the 1500m, winning her heat by half a lap with a personal best by more than five seconds.

"Marnie and Lindsy's times move them closer to the top tier in the OUA and we'll see further improvement over the next two weeks," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. "And Meghan Juuti seems to have found her best event in the 1000m."

The meet included teams from York, McMaster, Western, Toronto, Guelph, Laurentian and Windsor.

Laurentian takes next weekend off,then competes in it's final regular-season meet., the U. of Toronto's Hal Brown Invitational, on February 16th.

Lake State Results

Laurentian and Track North indoor track team returned from a successful weekend at the Lake State Open in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, with two first-place finishes by Leila Angrand and a sweep of the medals in the women's 800m.

The meet involved teams from Laurentian, Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State universities and featured large 18-runner fields in the featured 800m and mile events. The host coach was Track North's Steve Eles.

Angrand (Sudbury) led both the mile and 800m events from start to finish, winning both by over six seconds. Her times were 5:09.1 in the mile and 2:20.0 in the 800m. She was joined in the 800m, by teammates Marnie Smith (Sault Ste., Marie) and Meghan Juuti (Elliot Lake), who finished second and third with times of 2:25.9 and 2:26.4.

Other Laurentian runners included Maggie Robins, 9th in the 800m and 13th in the mile, Lindsy McNicoll, 7th in the mile and 10th in 800m, and Stephanie Flieler, 11th in the 800m. The Vees also competed in the 4x400m relay, where they placed 3rd out of four teams.

Track North's André Pelland placed 2nd in the men's 400m with a time of 52.38 and 5th in the 200m with a 23.93.

Chris Hocking placed 4th in the 55m with a time of 6.75 off a 6.44 heat. He also placed 9th in the 200m with a 27.02

The Voyageurs next meet is the York Classic in Toronto next weekend.

U of T Nike Track Classic Results

Laurentian University women's indoor track team competed in the Nike Track Classic at the U. of Toronto this weekend. They were joined by two members of the Track North Athletic Club.

In the 1500m, Leila Angrand (Sudbury), running in her first-ever indoor competition, placed 2nd among university athletes, fourth overall. Her time was a personal best 4:44.63.

In the 3000m, Lindsy McNicoll (Capreol) also placed 2nd among university athletes, fourth overall, with a personal best time of 10:47.88.

Laurentian's competes next weekend at the Laker Open at Lake Superior State University.

Rebecca Wins Hockey Gold in Germany

Congratulations to Rebecca Johnston, whose National Under-22 hockey team won the Air Canada European Cup by defeating host team Germany in the final yesterday. The score was 5-1, with Rebecca notching a goal and two assists.

The Canadians reached the final by beating the Swiss 11-0, the Japanese 10-0, the Germans 5-0, and then again 5-1 in the final. The Swedes and Americans were not in the tournament.

By my count, Rebecca scored two goals and five assists in the four tournament games, plus an additional goal in the exhibition.

Rebecca Germany versus Canada

Rebecca Johnston got a goal and an assist last night as the Canadian Women's Under-22 hockey team beat Germany 5 to 0. Her goal came on a breakaway and is sounded like the game was close (1-0) until the start of the third period. The Canadian team will play their semi-final today. Way to go Rebecca!

Devon and Rebecca in Germany

Congratulations to Devon Kershaw, who won his second world cup nordic ski race last week in Munich, Germany. Devon won a silver medal in the men's sprint, adding to his bronze world cup medal from last year.

Devon isn't the only Track North athlete competing in a different sport in Germany. Rebecca Johnston is playing for the Under-22 Canadian Women's Hockey Team in the Air Canada Cup this week. They won their first game, against Japan, the score of 10-0. They play Germany today.

Rebecca's Hockey Adventures

Rebecca Johnston had a super tournament against the Americans, scoring one goal and an assist, and helping the Canadian Under-22 team to win two games to one (and they only lost the one game in OT).

Rebecca apparently so impressed Hockey Canada that she's been invited to the senior team camp, where she will again be the youngest player (she's only 16). She's at the senior camp as we speak. Good luck Becca!

Rebecca Makes National Hockey Team

Congratulations to Rebecca Johnston. Less than a month after almost making Canada's national team for the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Beijing (she missed by only 2/10s of a second), Rebecca has cracked the National Under-22 HOCKEY team. Only 16 years old, Rebecca is the youngest member of the team by more than a year.

National Juniors Results

Wow - some tremendous results from National Juniors!
Results - National Junior Track and Field Championships,
Sherbrooke, Quebec

Led by Rebecca Johnston's bronze medal in the 400m, five athletes from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club placed in the top-seven at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Sherbooke Quebec this weekend.

Ranked fifth coming into the event, Johnston ran a personal best 55.44 to advance to the finals, then a 55.79 in the rain to claim her bronze medal. Her time was only .22 off the standard for the World Junior Games in Beijing, China. Rebecca remains in Sherbrooke, participating at a National Junior Relay camp.

Tianna Deck, ranked 13th before the event, shocked the field by placing fourth in the long jump. Competing in the pouring rain, Deck nailed her second last jump with a personal best leap of 5.33 metres.

Dan Gardiner placed fifth in triple jump, with a leap of 13.80 metres. He also placed 6th in the long jump with a jump of 6.63 metres.Dave Thibert placed 7th in the high jump with a jump of 1.85 metres.

Also competing were André Pelland, who placed 25th in the 400m with a time of 1:59.75; Eric Ouellet who was 31st in the 800m with a 1:59.75; Tanya Simard, 14th in the triple jump with a 10.51 metre; and Kaitlyn Tallman who placed 18th in the 3k with a 10:40.84 and 21st in the 1500m with a 4:52.57

Ellerton and Provincial Legion Results

Andrew Ellereton, Results, European Distance Tour, 2006

Andrew Ellerton, still representing Track North, is running some fast times on his European Tour. He started, jet-lagged and all, with a 1:47.81 for second place in the 800m in Kortrijk, Belgium. Then, two days later, he ran a blazing 1:46.91 in Gent, Belgium off a 52.0 split - again for second place. His final race of the tour is in Heusden, Netherlands on Saturday. He then returns to this side of the Atlantic to run at National Seniors. Andrew has one more outdoor track season left at the U. of Michigan next year.

Sudbury Rocks Run, Walk Results

Well done, Sudbury Rocks and organizers. The Sudbury Rocks Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes was a huge success, even though the weather was cold and a bit drizzly. A huge number of runners turned out (about 1000 in total). It was a monumental event to organize (over 250 volunteers), and I can only see it getting bigger in future years.

Backs in Motion Results

Two runners from Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club won medals at the Backs in Motion 5 kilometre road race this weekend in Toronto.

Lisa Labrecque placed 1st in the women's category and was third overall, with a time of 17:22. Teammate Serena Jennings (running on her birthday) placed third in the women's category with a time of 18:30. Over 350 runners competed in the combined run/walk.

Kaitlyn Tallman finished 3rd in the Open Girls 1500m event on the "boards" (146m indoor track) at the Hamilton Indoor Games finishing in a time of 4:52.11.

Track North's Woods Wins OUA Indoor Track Gold

Track North Athletic Club's Madeleine Woods, competing for the University of Windsor, ran to a gold medal at the Ontario University (OUA) Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Windsor.

Woods, a third year Kinesiology student, posted a winning time of 1 minute 32.22 seconds. This result ranks Woods first in the Canadian Inter-University (CIS) rankings. Woods also finished 4th in the 1000m event with a final time of 2 minutes 56.08 seconds.

Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, commented, "Madeleine has taken her running to a whole new level. She had a breakthrough season last summer as she made the transition to running middle distance, but this result is simply incredible. She went into this meet as the number one seed and obviously handled the pressure well - not only did she win gold, but she ran 2 seconds faster than her previous best over the distance."

Track North's Tammy Dufresne, also competing for the University of Windsor, finished 6th in the 600m event in a time of 1 minute 36.70 seconds and was also a member of the gold medal winning 4 X 400m and 4 X 800m relay teams.

Woods and Dufresne will now compete at the CIS Championships to be held in Saskatoon, March 9th through 11th.

Collegiate Cross Country

Amanda Kosmerly, running for Cambrian College has been burning up the collegiate cross country trails this fall. Amanda has competed in 3 races to date in Hamilton, Kingston and Peterborough and has finished in the gold medal position in all three races!!!! Her most recent victory was in Peterborough on the same course she will race Nationals at later this year.
Also, Amanda also ran the CIBC Run for the Cure 5km today (one day after her Peterborough victory) and accomplished her goal of breaking 20 minutes - running a time of 19:52! Things are looking great for this member of the "Track North 30+ Club"

Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships

Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships, Winnipeg, MB

Injuries were the nemesis of two Track North athletes at the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg this weekend.

Lisa Labrecque, nursing an achilles tendon injury, placed 9th in the senior women's 1500m with a time of 4:23.48.

Andrew Ellerton, who strained a hamstring in the 800m semi-finals, placed fourth in the final, with a time of 1:48.95.

Labrecque now heads to Belgium to compete in Sunday's Atletiek Vlaanderen Invitational. Ellerton's fourth place finish places him in the selection pool for the Commonwealth Games, to be held next March in Melbourne, Australia.

National Junior Results

Results - 2005 National Junior Track and Field Championships
Montreal, PQ - July 8-10th

Track North sent its largest contingent of athletes in several years to the National Junior Track and Field Championships in Montreal this past weekend and came away with five top-8 performances.

Dave Thibert, 18, overcame a thigh injury to place 5th overall in the men's high jump, finishing the competition with a best jump of 1.90m ,just short of his personal best.

Andrew Athanasopolous, 18, who hails from Elliot Lake, placed 5th in a very tight men's javelin competition, with a best throw of 57.34m.

Dan Gardiner, 17, jumped his way to an 8th place finish in the men's triple jump with a best performance of 13.34m.

Tanya Simard, 17, who hails from North Bay, placed 7th in the women's triple jump with a best performance of 10.97m. Tanya had a huge final jump (11.60+) but faulted by a few mere centimetres!

Eric Ouellette, 17, supplied the biggest suprise of the weekend with a huge personal best in the men's 800 metre semi-final, completing the distance in 1:55.44. Eric didn't have much left in the tank for the final where he finished 8th overall.

Candie Sabel, 18, finished 22nd overall in the 400 metre hurdle race with a final time of 1:08.01 seconds - a mere 2 tenths off her personal best.

OTFA's/Canada Games Selection Meet

Ottawa, Ontario

Lisa Labrecque, of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, won a gold medal at the Ontario Senior Track and Field Championships/Canada Games Trials in Ottawa last weekend.

Competing in the Senior Women's 800m, Labrecque led throughout the race, finishing in a personal best time of 2:06.49.

Also competing was Madeleine Woods, who placed 10th in the Canada Games selection section with a personal best time of 2:18.28.

This weekend, six Track North athletes will compete at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships in Montreal. The following athletes have met qualifying standards and will compete: Dan Gardnier (triple jump), Dave Thibert (high jump), Eric Ouellette (800), Candie Sabel (400mH), Andrew Athanasopolous (Javelin), Tanya Simard (Triple Jump).

* Andrew Ellerton representing the University of Michigan placed 5th in the 800m final! This is Andrew's second year in a row qualifying for this prestigious events 800m final. His time in the final, 1:46.25, is a new PB and ranks him third in Canada for that event!

Andrew Makes the NCAA Finals

Congratulations to Andrew Ellerton for qualifying fo the NCAA final for the second time in two years!

Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) qualified for the 800-meter run final to lead the University of Michigan men's track and field team on the second day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday (June 9) at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.

Ellerton clocked in at a season-best 1:47.30 for fourth place in the loaded first heat of the semifinals -- with six All-Americans among the eight-man field -- to advance to the 800-meter final for the second straight year. He earned All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place finish.

Starting the race in the middle of the track, the Wolverine dropped to the rear of the pack at the break and remained in the seventh position as Texas Tech's Johnathon Johnson, the defending NCAA outdoor champion in the event, set the pace at a quick 50.87 opening lap. Cutting to the outside down the backstretch, Ellerton began to move with 200 meters to go, passing several competitors around the turn before kicking into fourth place in the final straightaway. Ellerton shaved 0.58 seconds from his previous season-best mark, which he set during yesterday's preliminary heat.

Junior Andrew EllertonOn his 800-meter semifinal ... "I was way out the back the first 200 meters; they got out really hard, and I haven't been in a race that fast yet this year. So, that was good practice for Saturday, and I learned something too. On Saturday, I'll just have to put myself in it a little better, and see what I have left in the last 100. Hopefully, I'll be up there with those guys. I didn't really overextend myself today; I ran hard the last 100, but I didn't go all out. I knew our heat was really fast, and I didn't think the other heat would go that fast. I took the chance today and conserved a little bit of energy.

"On the first heat field ... "I wasn't too nervous going in, not anymore than any other race. I just knew it would be a pretty fast race. Most of those guys in the heat made finals; it was almost a preview of Saturday' minus a couple guys. I knew that going in, and I just wanted to be competitive."

Junior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) posted a qualifying performance in the 800m as the University of Michigan men's track and field team opened competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.

Ellerton registered a season-best 1:47.88 to win the fourth heat in the 800-meter run and pick up an automatic qualifier to the semfinal round. Starting the race in the inside lane, Ellerton settled into the back of the eight-man field at the break and remained there through the first lap as the pack came through the opening 400 meters at 52.23 -- the fastest opening split among the four preliminary heats. The Wolverine cut to the outside down the backstretch and gradually pushed toward the front before coming out the bend in the third position. Ellerton used his kick to take a slim lead in the final straightaway as the top three finished just 0.25 seconds apart. Ellerton's time was the fastest of the preliminary round and improved his season best by 0.47 seconds.

On his 800-meter preliminary ... "My race went better than what I was expecting. It felt really good. I was thinking I would have to work a little harder than I actually did. I ended up with the fastest seed time; I was a little surprised at how slow the other heats went. I was just shooting for a top three. I saw that Johnathan Johnson was in my heat, and he's probably the favorite coming in here. I was just expecting him to take it, and I'd run a comfortable top three. When it came down to the homestretch, there was a guy from Baylor starting to come on, and I didn't want to take any chances, so, I just pushed that extra little bit just to make sure. I didn't have to work too hard, and it felt pretty comfortable. It was also the fastest time I've run all year; it gives me a lot more confidence going into tomorrow and Saturday."

TNOR Baby + Baby News

Great news on the development of the Track North 4 x 800m relay teams of 2025! Hot on the heels of the Krista Bray new-baby announcement, comes not one, but two more.

Kerry MacKelvie and husband Shane (O'Brien) are expecting on October 7th.

Running hard on her shoulder with a baby-due-date of October 10th are Sheila Aitken and Andrew (Morrow). Sheila, however has told me that she plans to kick early and outlean Kerry by delivering on the 6th.

TNOR: Results

Penn Relays, Philadelphia

Andrew Ellerton ran three relays at the prestigious meet, and won three gold medals.

Andrew's U. of Michigan crew won the distance medley, 4 x 1 mile and 4 x 800m relays, and put to rest the controversy about their distance medley win over home-town Arkansas at the Indoor NCAA Championships (Arkansas was first over the line, but was DQ'd for interference. With 3 wins over Arkansas at Penn, the Arkansas trash talkers have been silenced.

Andrew ran an excellent 1:47.9/800m, 4:06 mile and a 1:52/800m split. The Distance medley time, by the way, broke a Michigan school record by 5 seconds.

It's official. Laurentian University is building an 200m indoor track!! It's part of a fieldhouse complex that will include a 2-story climbing wall, new weight training and cardio facilities, squash courts and extra gymnasium space. Projected completion date is Fall 2007. Yahoo!!!!
